Grand Teton Lodge company history timeline

1926

During the summer of 1926, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and his family spent several days touring Jackson Hole with Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Horace Albright.

1929

1929: Sheffield sells his property, effectively selling the town of Moran to the Snake River Land Company.

The rich history of Grand Teton lives on in the physical landscapes, the creatures that inhabit these lands, and the spirit of the individuals whom both fought for and against the park's eventual establishment in 1929.

Over the next five years until the Lodge was opened, the town of Moran was removed from the landscape and moved about 11 miles to the west. It was run by the Teton Lodge Company, which became the Grand Teton Lodge Company when Rockefeller purchased the majority of the town in 1929.

1943

In 1943, Franklin D. Roosevelt declared additional land in the valley to be Jackson Hole National Monument.

1946

Only ten years earlier, in 1946, the original Jackson Lake Lodge was on a path to demolition and the entire site was to be cleared of all tourist accommodations.

1949

In 1949, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. donated the land he purchased to the government to be included in the national park.

1950

1950-59: The Grand Teton Lodge Company moves most of the old Sheffield cabins up to Colter Bay.

1955

In 1955, with the construction of the Jackson Lake Lodge, the old ramshackle town of Moran was no longer an eyesore on the natural beauty of Jackson Lake.

1956

The current Jackson Lake Lodge was completed in 1956 and has been operating continuously as a hotel and conference center since that time; however, despite its success as a tourist destination the Lodge complex, as it is known today, almost didn’t exist.

1959

By 1959, the newly formed Grand Teton Lodge Company had moved most of the buildings in town to Colter Bay and other areas around the park.

Roters’ project spanned two years and in 1959 the ten Rendezvous Mural panels were installed in the Mural Room of the Jackson Lake Lodge.

1972

In 1972, Congress established the John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
