• 1830’s: Six Ottawa and Chippewa bands reside in the Grand Traverse Region

1836

After the United States Senate abrogated many provisions of the 1836 Treaty of Washington without the consent of the Michigan Anishinaabek communities, the 1836 Treaty signatories sought a second treaty.

1934

• 1934: Grand Traverse Band petitions for federal recognition under tribal leadership of Ben Peshaba

1943

The Tribe applied for federal recognition in 1943 under the leadership of Casper Ance.

1978

The Tribe applied for federal recognition in 1978 under the leadership of Dodie Harris Chambers.

1980

• 1980: Federal recognition granted to 300 members

1983

Under the Indian Reorganization Act The Tribe developed Tribal programs to serve the membership and in 1983 established an Economic Development Corporation (gaming) and began to establish businesses for the Tribe.

1984

The Grand Traverse Band opened the first high-stakes Indian bingo hall in the State of Michigan in 1984, when the tribe opened the Super Bingo Palace and the Leelanau Sands Casino.

1985

In 1985, the Leelanau Sands Casino moved to a larger location and added table games.

1995

• 1995: GTB creates an economic development corporation to drive commercial development
