    Job Description Responsible for the overall supervision and direction of the weld department. Provides support of other weld tasks as dictated by senior leadership. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Supervises the weld department and its employees. Conducts periodic performance evaluations, maintains discipline per policies, and ensures all direct reports adhere to all policies and procedures. Maintains positive communications with employees to build strong interaction. Provides assistance and training to welders. Assist with certification training and documentation review. Coordinates, supervises, and monitors production schedules and production performance. Prepares operational schedules and coordinates weld activities to ensure production and quality of products meets specifications. Reviews jobs for accurate process to meet delivery schedules. Leads continuous process improvement and cost reduction interaction. Maintains integrity of work instructions for the department. Assists engineers with process development for new products and process improvement for existing products. Assists engineers with design and review of welding fixtures and tooling as required for new jobs. Works along with other manufacturing departments, quality control, and engineering to solve problems with fabrications, prints, routers and/or work instructions. Other duties as assigned. Work to reduce and eliminate barriers and obstacles to improve overall cost and scheduling performance. Able to interpret engineering drawings, including weld symbology. Knowledge of wire and filler material applications for various steel alloys, aluminum, and some exotic materials. Working knowledge of fixturing and weld set up parameters. Proficient in the use of precision measuring instruments. Expert level knowledge of military specification and AWS specifications. Knowledge of tight tolerance weldments and straightening. Knowledge of manual vertical milling machines, saws, grinders and overhead cranes. Understanding of all internal weld procedures and welding related operational procedures. Expert in all weld process used by GSM (GTA, GMA & SMA). Nondestructive Testing (NDT) knowledge. Working knowledge of MS Office and Windows based computer programs; ERP/MRP based company-wide sales order administrative systems. Able to measure performance to goals and standards. Able to balance and achieve positive results in the areas of safety, quality, productivity, cost and employee relations. Requirements ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Perform NDT testing and properly document results per customer and GSM requirements. Review NDT and weld records for completeness and accuracy. Review contracts, blueprints, and customer / industry specifications to determine dimensions, tolerances and any other applicable inspection and test criteria or requirements. Prepare and review technical reports for accuracy. Verify conformance to specifications including measurement of angular dimensions, radii, contours, clearances, thread lead, and surface finish. Utilize measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, optical comparators, height gages, fillet gages, and others. Document inspection and test results including first run parts, assemblies, finished product, etc. Verify raw materials, including critical application materials, through the review of chemical and physical data on certified material test reports. Witness tests and manufacturing activities to ensures accuracy of reports. Examine defective parts to determine root cause of defects and recommends changes or modifications. Support customer and government source inspections. Validate that subcontract operations such as heat treat, plating, testing, and other functions satisfy purchase order requirements. Support the activities related to the execution of the Quality Management System. Must be flexible enough to work in all areas of operation per the direction of the leadership. Tests units for fit of moving parts and mechanical functioning. Tests parts for hardness. Compares product with parts list or sample model to ensure completion of assembly. Rejects defective parts, and marks type of defect on part, container of parts, or inspection tag. Writes reports regarding inspection and testing results. Manually operates and sets up Mitutoyo CMM's and FARO Arm. Supports inspection duties, quality objectives, and the Quality Management System. Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications. Assists in other areas in support of product conformity. Facilitates effective communications and working relationships (including answering department phone). About the Opportunity As a Class B Welder, you'll perform production and intermediate-level welds under the direction of senior welders and supervision. GSM utilizes GTAW (TIG), SMAW (Stick), and GMAW (MIG) processes on materials such as stainless steel, HY-80/100, and other defense-grade alloys.
