National Interstate is looking for an Underwriting Trainee to join their team. This individual will work hybrid from our Richfield, Ohio office.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Learns to evaluate and underwrite new and renewal business in accordance with Company underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
Learns to analyze risk information to make informed decisions on coverage, pricing, and terms.
Participates in collaborating with actuaries, agents, brokers, and clients to obtain necessary information and clarify details.
Assists with ordering additional reports and screens, such as motor vehicle reports, loss history reports, outside inspections, etc., to inform decisions.
Learns how to document underwriting decisions in compliance with state and federal insurance regulations.
Assists with evaluating existing policies for potential renewal or modification.
Participates in communicating underwriting decisions clearly and effectively to internal teams, agents, and brokers.
Develops knowledge of industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions.
Develops effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.
Learns to interpret, explain, and market products and services.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Risk Management and Insurance, or a related field or equivalent experience.Scope of Job/Qualifications: Typically participates in a formal training program for 6 months to a year. Performs work under close supervision and technical direction. Works on assignments of low to moderate technical and logistical complexity. Demonstrates basic analytical, risk assessment, and problem-solving abilities. Develops and maintains knowledge of company policies and industry laws and regulations. Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills. Develops strong analytical skills and the ability to use data to analyze situations, identify problems, and develop effective solutions.

Overview
The Momentum Trainee program for professionals is a robust 9-month program that builds a foundation of insurance expertise through classroom learning, business rotations, and on-the-job training. Momentum has launched over 250 successful and rewarding careers at Selective and that number is still growing - upon completion of the program, trainees transition to full-time roles in Underwriting, including Excess & Surplus lines, Risk Management, Accounting and more. The training kicks off in July 2026 for 8 weeks at our corporate headquarters in Branchville, NJ before trainees return to their regional offices.
Selective Insurance is hiring Underwriting Trainees for our Heartland Region based out of our Indianapolis, IN office. In this role, you will learn to underwrite renewal business by the successful completion of our training. You will also learn to administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, insurance laws and regulations. In addition, you will review an agent's book of business and understand techniques for providing service and guidance to agents, all while learning the business and supporting more experienced underwriters.
Responsibilities
Develop proficiency in insurance theories and practices.
Develop expertise in analyzing customer needs.
Learn how to negotiate price, coverage, and terms for renewals.
Deliver and present renewal proposals to agency personnel.
Build relationships with agents through agency visitation, phone conversations and written correspondence.
Collaborate with underwriting, claims, and marketing in an effort to learn business and processes.
Demonstrate an aptitude for analyzing and interpreting underwriting information.
Analyze data to determine coverage and line of business upsells.
Participate in a corporate group project as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Requirements
May be required to travel to agent's offices, attend Risk Management surveys, and participate in Premium Audit and Claim reviews. Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing.
Demonstrated self-starter.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers/peers.
Must show sound, balanced and timely decision-making skills.
Achieve AINS and AU insurance designation within 18 months of accepting position.
Must be willing to travel frequently to our corporate headquarters in New Jersey.

Recommends appropriate pricing and coverage modifications or enhancements for risks after complete analysis and consideration of applicant documentation, business factors and competitive situations.
Prepares written communications on adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status and declinations. Verbally notifies agents of decisions where appropriate in order to ensure clear understanding of decisions
Uses available underwriting systems and modeling tools; updates the underwriting systems by documenting pertinent information relative to the underwriting requirements, status and final decision.
Prepares quotes and answers questions from agencies and internal or external customers, escalating issues to management as necessary. Negotiates with agents to reach positive and profitable outcomes.
Carries out responsibilities consistently, dependably and accurately.
Makes field visits to Agent and Broker offices to build relationship and better understand territory and market nuances; accompanies Risk Control on visits to insureds or prospective insureds to better understand risk control assessments relating to risk exposure and control.
Interacts with Claim personnel on issues relating to specific claims, and other internal customers such as legal and actuarial concerning the insurability of prospective risks and continued insurability.
Develops a working knowledge of product language across all CNA business units, underwriting practices, policies and guidelines.
Develops a full, working knowledge of all relevant CNA system
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Obtain an adjuster license for the state of North Carolina.
Learn to analyze, review, and interpret policies, to assess liability, verify and review damages, and properly document information in the claim file.
Accounting:
Develop basic understanding of how to apply premium audit and account current cash applications.
Learn how to apply payments in Dashboard application.
Underwriting:
Develop basic understanding of various coverage options. Shadow underwriters to develop understanding of their and fact gathering and decision-making processes.
Assist underwriting assistants with policy endorsement processing.
Underwrite small new and renewal accounts. Support territorial teams in all aspects of underwriting, including policy and inspection analysis, customer service support phone calls, and all other aspects of agency relationship management.
Learn process of setting up submission files and complete submission database updates.
Marketing:
Develop basic knowledge of all marketing functions.
Learn how to prepare communication materials and promotional items utilizing various mediums.
Shadow marketing team to see how agency relationships are developed and maintained. Learn about agency books of business.
Operations:
Learn process of sorting mail and scanning into ImageRight.
Develop basic knowledge of switchboard operations.
Shadow policy services and learn the workflow for processing policy endorsements.
Information Technology:
Shadow network team to develop understanding of helpdesk functions and overall network management.
Learn to troubleshoot tickets, manage agent issues and test Atlantic Casualty Express System as well as Policy Issuance with P&C team.
Gain understanding of database administration functions with database management team.
Learn inner workings of Claim Center and how to test various components.
Gain understanding of various roles within IT and the impact on overall organizational effectiveness.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
College degree in risk management and insurance preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS:

Solid written and verbal communication skills are required to interact competently with internal and external customers.
Must be capable of logical and creative reasoning and be able to apply those skills in any situation.

Great American is currently seeking a Claim Trainee for our Corporate Claims Office in Cincinnati, OH. Great American's Claim Trainee Development Program is our foundation program geared toward candidates who have the desire to receive claims specific training and knowledge, laying a strong foundation for a career in insurance.
Responsibilities
Our Claim Trainee Development Program takes an organization wide approach to developing the foundational skills required of a successful claim professional. Claim Trainees learn to perform the required analysis, investigation and claim handling functions, enabling them to make appropriate recommendations involving claim strategy, management, and resolution. The Claim Trainee Development Program includes a combination of activities aimed at providing the individual a full understanding of the claim department, as well as how it functions within the organization.
The program includes networking and mentoring, as well as professional development and assignments including:
Business unit rotations across the Great American Insurance Group that involve claim handling, job shadowing, claims systems training, and special assignments, allowing for broad exposure to the organization
Obtaining the P&C Staff Adjuster License
Earning the preeminent claims designation, the Associate in Claims, from The Institutes
Participation in Great American University and Claim College seminars and workshops
Participation in Toastmasters to develop communication and public speaking skills
Structured networking opportunities to meet the people across Great American's many business units and learn the different roles in the industry
Various reading assignments and self-study courses on a diverse range of insurance topics, providing a foundation of claims and general insurance knowledge
Successful candidates have come to Great American with 1-2 years of experience in a variety of industries including the medical field, construction, restoration, the legal profession, customer service, criminal justice, and retail management.

Bachelor's degree required
3.5 preferred GPA, with a 3.0
