1982

1982 Great Clips, Inc. officially incorporates on July 12.

Great Clips, Inc. was established in 1982 in Minneapolis.

1983

March 1983: Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner.

July 16, 1983: The first franchised Great Clips location opened.

1984

1984: David and Ray recruited Rhoda Olsen, Ray’s sister, to work for Great Clips part-time as a training consultant.

1987

1987: Rhoda joined the company full-time as the vice president of human resources.

1993

1993: The first Great Clips hair salon in Canada opens.

1994

1994 $100M total system sales

1997

1997: Ray bought out his partners to become the majority shareholder.

1998

1998: Rhoda was promoted to president.

1998 Racing with NASCAR Great Clips launches a promotional partnership with NASCAR. For almost 20 years, Great Clips would sponsor fan-favorite drivers, including superstars Kasey Kahne and Jason Leffler.

2002

2002 Great Clips introduces its community outreach and giving program, Great Needs.

2004

2004 $500M total system sales

2006

2006: Great Clips marks 2,500 hair salon locations.

2007

2007 Walk Right In Great Clips launches the “Walk Right In” campaign and introduces Sudz, everyone’s favorite shampoo bottle mascot!

2009

2009 Largest haircare brand in North America At 2,795 locations, Great Clips becomes the single largest haircare brand in North America, with a nearly 50% market share of all franchised hair salon units.

2011

2011: Ray became chairman of the board and Rhoda was promoted to CEO. Charlie Simpson, formerly an executive vice president and the chief operations officer, became president.

2011 Great technology Great Clips becomes a leader in using technology to enhance the customer experience, including the industry-changing Online Check-In and Clip Notes®

2011 A Great Clips salon in Springfield, Ohio sets the Guinness World Record for most consecutive haircuts—392!

2013

2013 $1B+ total system sales

2014

2014: Charlie Simpson retired and Steve Hockett became president.

2014 Clips of Kindness Great Clips begins Clips of Kindness, a systemwide program throughout North America, to provide complimentary clipper cuts to customers facing hair loss due to cancer treatments.

2016

2016: Great Clips marks 4,000 hair salon locations.

2017

2017: Great Clips reaches 150 hair salons open in Canada.

2017 The Mohawk Warrior Great Clips announces its promotional partnership with Monster Jam.

2018

2018: Rhoda Olsen moved to vice chair of the board, Steve Hockett became CEO and Rob Goggins, the then-chief operations officer, became president.
