Great Falls company history timeline

1805

Before the party left in mid July of 1805, they celebrated the Fourth of July in the new territory at White Bear Island.

Known as "The Electric City", Great Falls has a long tradition of history which began with the famous expedition of Lewis and Clark in 1805.

In 1805 the explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark observed the falls and nearby Giant Springs, one of the world’s largest freshwater springs.

1828

The company went bankrupt and turned over its assets to the newly formed Chesapeake and Ohio Canal company in 1828.

1880

All this changed, though, during the 1880’s, with the arrival of Paris Gibson.

1882

Gibson came west in May of 1882.

1887

Great Falls, city, seat (1887) of Cascade county, west-central Montana, United States It lies along the Missouri River, near the falls (96 feet [29 metres] high) for which it was named.

1888

And, in 1888, a silver smelter was built along the Missouri River just outside of downtown Great Falls.

1893

Montana State University was established in 1893 as the Agricultural College of the State of Montana.

1894

A most important event in this period was a vote April 18, 1894, which authorized the issuance of a $40,000 bond for the purpose of purchasing future park sites.

1902

The first graduate degree was awarded in 1902.

1920

Downtown Great Falls had several department stores, including Buttrey’s which had the town’s first escalator and the Paris, which burned down and was rebuilt for a staggering $750,000 in the late 1920s.

1927

First Russell art sale came in 1927 in Great Falls

1940

Another poster shows what Great Falls looked like when the west end of Central Avenue ended with Gibson Circle before it was replaced in 1940 with the Civic Center.

1950

East Base was continuously expanded throughout the war and after it, with the Strategic Air Command taking over the airbase in the 1950’s.

And, beginning in the late 1950’s and lasting through today, Malmstrom also housed a significant number of nuclear missile silos.

1955

For instance, the entertainment portion shows a large to-scale model of the Grand Opera House, a sandstone and brick building kitty-corner from the Cascade County Courthouse that wowed visitors like Mark Twain before being razed in 1955.

1959

In 1959, the name of East Base was changed to the name it has today – Malmstrom Air Force Base.

1990

The closure of many resource extraction businesses, the departure of several railroads and the general upheaval in agriculture all combined to put a lid on Great Falls growth during this time. Thus, when 1990 rolled around, Great Falls still only had a population of 55,000 people (while Billings had over 80,000 people by this time) – although some growth had occurred outside of Great Falls.

2000

Additionally, during the 2000’s, a fair amount of growth occurred just outside of Great Falls, including even some luxury and trophy homes.
