Respiratory Therapist assess patients with respiratory disorders, conduct diagnostic testing, develop treatment plans, and administer respiratory therapy. Operate medical devices, monitor patient responses, and provide emergency care. Work with healthcare teams to help manage respiratory conditions, improving lung function and respiratory health.
What you will do
* Conduct tests that support the evaulation of cardiopulmonary functions.
* Educate patients and their families about their conditions and teach appropriate disease management techniques, such as breathing exercises and the use of medications and respiratory equipment.
* Determine requirements for treatment, such as type, method and duration of therapy, precautions to be taken, and medication and dosage, compatible with physician orders. Enforce safety rules and ensure careful adherence to physicians' orders.
* Explain treatment procedures to patients to gain cooperation and allay fears.
* Maintain charts that contain patients' pertinent identification and therapy information.
* Perform oxygen requirement testing with patients.
* Instruct and perform bronchopulmonary drainage and assist or instruct patients in performance of breathing exercises.
* Provide emergency care, including artificial respiration, external cardiac massage and assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
* Monitors patient's physiological response to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes, and consul with physician if adverse reactions occur.
* Work as part of a team of physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals to manage patient care by assisting with medical procedures and related duties.
* Regular and reliable attendance.
* Demonstrate respiratory care procedures to trainees and other health care personnel.
* Inspect, clean, test and maintain respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, ordering repairs when necessary.

Qualifications
* Associate's degree (AA) Graduate of an CoARC approved Respiratory Therapist program. Required
* Licensed by the State of Iowa as Respiratory Care and Polysomnography Respiratory Care Practitioner. Required
* Credentialed by the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Required

Receives, documents, and executes physician's orders relating to Respiratory Care Order Set. Interprets and evaluates physician's orders and charts that pertain to respiratory and identifies possible contraindications to medications, treatments, and related hazard with their use.
Measures and administers prescribed medications to patients, such as oxygen and aerosolized medications. Administers the following procedures or therapies; EzPAP, chest physical therapy, incentive spirometry, TB skin tests, pulse oximetry, and bedside pulmonary function/mechanics, high flow oxygen therapy.
Assesses patient's condition and response to respiratory therapy by checking patients pulse, blood pressure, respiratory frequency, tidal volume, inspiratory pressure, cough, sputum, breath sounds, and other pertinent data that relates to the patient. Must also be alert to adverse reactions of patient during treatment, plus be aware of proper response to emergencies.
Recognizes and responds to the signs of cardiopulmonary arrest and/or failure and life threatening arrhythmias during EKG's. As necessary, assists in performing and or initiating CPR procedures.
Modifies therapy to deal with adverse or ineffective patient response or reports changes to shift supervisor.
Records procedures, patient response, and medication administration in compliance with departmental documentation requirements. Relays same information.
Participates in in-services, continuing education, and other staff development activities.
Keeps confidential all patient information received and follows MMC Guest Relations guidelines.
Evaluates ABG reports and checks for accuracy of results and reports abnormal reports to proper therapist, nurse, and/or physician.
Performs arterial punctures when certified to perform procedure by Medical Director (otherwise procedure is done only under direct supervision of ABG certified individual). Able to run ABG samples on the GEM Premier 4000.
Performs nasal and tracheal suctioning of patients of all ages and obtains tracheal secretions for culture.
Performs CPR procedures as part of Stat Code Team.
Maintains patients on continuous mechanical ventilators and is responsible for providing these patients with respiratory care (monitors patients every 1-3 hours).
Under the supervision of registered therapist, performs the following tasks;
Is primarily responsible for the respiratory stature of patients in ICU and makes appropriate decisions to insure that these patients are receiving the best in respiratory care; recommends or obtains ABG samples, x-rays, O2, and other respiratory care procedures that one feels is necessary for the patient's welfare.
Implements weaning procedures from continuous mechanical ventilations and monitors patients during this procedure.
Alerts therapist, supervisor, RN, and Physician or Medical Director to any changes in the cardiopulmonary status of patients in the ICU or any other critically ill patient of any age.
Monitors endotracheal cuffs on patients of all ages with artificial airways; assists in airway care as indicated.
Assists in clinical instruction of RT students.
Auscultates lungs of patients in ICU and reports findings to proper RN, therapist, or physician.
Instructs patients, families, and other MMC personnel in the proper care of RT procedures and techniques.
May assist physician in performing bronchoscopy, certified by medical director. Maintains all supplies, monitors patients, obtains cultures and cytology samples and sterilizes equipment. Participates in conscious sedation procedures and patient monitoring.
Perform skin testing (certified by Medical Director)
Provides pulmonary services in the Emergency Department. Performs patients assessments and treatment according to the Emergency Department/Respiratory Care protocol.
Participates in departmental or multidisciplinary teams related to clinical quality, safety, education, best practices, or process improvements.
Follows MMC & Pulmonary Medicine infection control policies.

The Respiratory Care Practitioner Will:
Conducts patient assessments and interprets clinical data necessary for the delivery of quality patient care.

Provides care for patients requiring ventilator assistance, complex respiratory devices and procedures.

Required:

As a Respiratory Therapist at MercyOne, you will This position is responsible for the administration of routine respiratory care to all pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Areas worked include general acute care areas, intensive care, emergency department, surgical suites, recovery rooms, skilled nursing facilities, and other clinical areas.
* Performs incentive spirometry, aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, pulmonary drainage procedures, BIPAP/CPAP, ventilator management, therapeutic bronchoscopy, co-oximetry, ekg, holter, zio, intubation assist, extubation, blood gas, outpatient testing, and suctioning following interpretation of physician order.
* Assesses patients receiving Respiratory Care using beside assessment technique and knowledge of indications, contraindications, hazards of the above procedures and actions/reactions of medications being given. Responds to and are team members of the resuscitation and rapid response pages.
* Performs basic spirometry procedures, electrocardiograms, arterial blood gas sampling and analysis.
* Provides patient education and assists with community events dealing with Respiratory Care.
* Areas worked include general acute care areas, intensive care, emergency department, surgical suites, recovery rooms, skilled nursing facilities, and other clinical areas.

The Respiratory Care Practitioner:
Conducts patient assessments and interprets clinical data necessary for the delivery of quality patient care.
Implements and evaluates the plan of care related to respiratory procedures including but not limited to aerosol, secretion mobilization, and hyperinflation therapies.
Provides care for patients requiring ventilator assistance, complex respiratory devices and procedures.
Performs comprehensive ventilator management and monitors the cardiopulmonary status of patients receiving intensive respiratory care.
Maintains emergency airway equipment for patients with artificial airways.
Performs diagnostic studies on patients as designated by department policy and/or by physician order.
Consults with physicians, nurses and other health care professionals and participates in daily patient rounds for assigned area to promote consistent quality and delivery of patient care.
Completes all documentation for patient charting in compliance with standards for accuracy and content as established by the department and SRAlab.
Monitors and documents patient responses to therapeutic interventions and progress toward outcomes.
Assists with the development of clinical research protocols and participates in their implementation.

Respiratory Care Practitioners:
Perform respiratory care according to policies, procedures, and protocols of Lurie Children's.
Perform patient assessment and analyze laboratory and diagnostic data to assist in patient plan of care.

Provide airway care, administer inhaled medications, perform airway clearance, bronchial hygiene, and lung expansion therapy.
Initiate, monitor, and maintain therapeutic gases including heliox, nitric oxide, oxygen and nitrogen.
Evaluate the patient's progress through continuous observation and assessment of responses to interventions, treatments, and therapies and recommends revision in the care plan according to changes in patient needs.
Demonstrate knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization as required.
Informed and up to date in respiratory care by utilizing current respiratory and healthcare literature for information and problem solving.
Communicate with the family and members of the multidisciplinary team to identify health care needs.
Anticipate impending emergent situations and intervenes effectively.

The Respiratory Care Practitioner II reflects the mission, vision, and values of NMHC, adheres to the organizations Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
This role is a clinically competent, licensed professional who administers Respiratory care to the acutely ill patient through assessment, planning/evaluation, intervention and treatment.
Responsibilities:
Effectively interacts with patient, significant others, and other health team members, while providing care within the scope of his/her training.
Meets and maintains requirements of an RCP II.
Qualifications
Required:
Recent acute care hospital clinical experience with multiple age populations including some Pediatrics.
If an internal promotion, must meet all dept. RCP I and II requirements
High school graduate or equivalent.
Graduate of an American Medical Association/Committee for Accreditation Respiratory Therapy Program.
CERT CRT, LIC RCP, CERT BLS
Preferred:
2 plus years of recent pediatric acute care.
Associates degree or higher.
CERT PALS, REG RRT, CERT NRP, CERT ACLS

Job Description
The Respiratory Care Practitioner/Sleep Technician performs all duties of Sleep Technologist I and II. This position performs comprehensive sleep testing analysis and comprehensive evaluation and treatment of respiratory related sleep disorders under the general supervision of the clinical director (M.D., D.O., and/or PH.D) or designee. This may involve polysomnography with ventilator and positive airway pressure titrations. Has the ability to complete administrative tasks as well as technical duties. This is a technical position with no supervisory responsibilities but can provide respiratory care guidance to all Polysomnographic Technologist.
Essential Job Functions:
Monitors and maintains mechanical ventilator, continuous positive pressure devices, oxygen and humidity devices.
Assesses patients and diagnostic data in order to adjust ventilator and positive airway pressure settings per protocol.
Assesses and evaluates the patient's respiratory care in consultation with physicians, nurses and other health care personnel.
Possesses adept clinical skill in manipulating ventilators and positive airway pressure equipment.
Troubleshoots basic ventilator and positive airway pressure equipment.
Scores sleep/wake stages and scoring clinical events (such as respiratory events cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) utilizing AASM (American Academy of Sleep Medicine) standards.
Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data
Demonstrate critical thinking and ability to work with minimal supervision to analyze complex situations and applies policy.
Evaluates the patient's progress through continuous observation and assessment of responses to interventions.
Maintain continuing education requirements for credential by reviewing literature and attending continuing education meeting and seminars.
Respond to sleep patients' procedural-related inquires by providing appropriate education utilizing sleep center protocols.
Calibrates, maintains, and troubleshoots equipment. Selects amplifier settings, obtains quality data, and analyzes data during recordings.
Perform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identify, correct and document artifact.
Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.)
Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
Performs other job functions as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduate of a CoARC accredited associates degree program in respiratory care required.
Current licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of Illinois required.
Active RRT Credential (Registered Respiratory Therapist) from the National Board of Respiratory Care, in good standing.
RPSGT (Registered Polysomnographic Technologist) from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) obtained within 1 year of employment required.
PALS Certification within the first year of employment is required.
Current BLS certification required through AHA.
Demonstrated effective written and spoken communication skills.
Ability to move machines and patient weighing in excess of 25 pounds.
Ability to comply with the BRPT standards of Conduct.
