Job Description
GENERAL PURPOSE
Responsible for the organization, implementation, and supervision of daily camp activities.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must be at least 16 years old with at least one (1) year of experience in athletic youth related leadership field preferred. Must be organized, and have good problem-solving skills, dependable, and flexible.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervise program participants.
Prepare and actively participate in camp activities.
Assist with the daily attendance records.
Assure safety of camp participants at all times.
Respond to concerns and complaints in a timely manner.
Enforce camp rules and regulations.
Guide campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities.
Provide a high quality of customer service in a professional manner to the internal customer that will facilitate team building and exceptional customer service to the external customer.
Follow the Wheaton Park District policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Proactively support the V.A.L.U.E.S. (integrity, fun, commitment, adaptability and growth, kindness, and service) on a daily basis.
Organize, live, demonstrate, and implement the Character Counts program for coaches and parents.
Maintain good safety awareness and follow all safety guidelines and procedures.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC.
Must have and maintain: CPR/AED certified or obtained within one (1) year of employment. Be a “Mandated Reporter” for the Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to: frequently move about the camp area for long periods of time with occasional stationary periods, and position one's self to assist or participate with campers, move across uneven ground and ascend/descend stairs/ladder, and move items such as various sports equipment, etc. weighing up to 25 lbs. and overhead and shoulders weighing up to 10 lbs.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
Must be able to: occasionally be exposed to all weather conditions, biting/stinging bugs and insects, dirt, and poisonous plants. This position will rarely be exposed to fumes, odors, dust, mold, mud, and wet, slippery surfaces.

7:15 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday at Central Athletic Complex from May 26 - August 13, 2026

Position Responsibilities

ABOUT THE JOB
As a Camp Counselor at NSSRA, you will work with individuals of varying ages and disabilities, provide hands-on support, and implement activities including sports, games, swimming, arts, outdoor activities, leisure, community outings, and more. Camp Counselors may work in ratios of 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3 depending on participant needs. Additionally, NSSRA provides Inclusion services for individuals with disabilities participating in Summer Camp Programs at our partnering agencies. In this role, you will be responsible for the following tasks:
Actively engage and supervise individuals with disabilities.
Ensure the safety of participants during summer recreation programs, transportation, transition times, etc.
Communicate professionally and consistently with participants, parents, team members, and the public when needed.
Submit timely reports, evaluations, and time sheets, maintaining accurate and complete records.
Fulfill other duties as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction and supervision of the Recreation Manager and Camp Directors, the Camp Caravan Counselor is responsible for planning, preparing, and participating in camp activities. Camp hours will vary from 6:30am until 6:00pm depending on elective before and after camp. These positions run from 10 weeks, in addition to training days scheduled prior to the start of camp. Camp Caravan Counselors will work with children ranging in age from 6-12 years, in groups of 5-20 campers. Activities include but are not limited to; swimming, completing crafts, group games, table activities, nature activities, gym activities, off-site field trips, and much more. Counselors are expected to interact with campers throughout their entire shift, lead and/or assist with activities, be a team-player, and ensure campers are always safe. Additional duties include behavior management, set-up/clean-up of the camp location, craft/activity prep and other duties as assigned. This is an at-will position.
Camp Caravan Dates: June 9th - August 14th: Intro to Camp Caravan (6/9-6/12), Camp Caravan (6/15-8/7), and Dog Days of Summer Camp (8/10-8/14).
Orientation Dates: Starting in Mid-May with details to follow.
Hours: Monday - Friday with availability between 6:30 am - 6:30 pm
Shifts will generally be scheduled for 4-8 hours per day.

PLEASE NOTE: Expectation is that you will be available for the entire 10-week program with a limit of one week of absence for a scheduled family vacation or similar that should be discussed at time of hire. Various shift options are available and can be discussed during the interview process.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to swim and pass a swim test, with comfort and confidence being in the water with kids.
Ability to run, jump, play games, and engage in physical activities, including water-based games and activities, that may require quick movements and agility.
Comfortable standing, walking, and being on your feet for extended periods.
Able to maintain attention, high level of energy or excitement for extended periods of time.
Strong voice and listening skills with the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds.
Must have adequate sight to observe participants and identify potential hazards.
Capable of lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, such as equipment, supplies, or backpacks.
Ability to spend majority of the time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions including high heat and humidity.
Capable of assisting campers with basic physical needs, such as applying sunscreen, tying shoes, or adjusting life jackets, etc.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING
The ideal candidate will be outgoing, reliable, self-motivated, and creative with a strong interest in working with children.
Must be 16 years of age or older.
Prior experience working with children of multiple ages is recommended.
Previous camp experience is a plus.
Preference given to candidates working towards a degree in education, recreation, or similar field.
Ability to effectively communicate with participants, their parents, and the public.
Ability to maintain discretion regarding confidential matters and/or information.
Proficient in MS Outlook or other email system for communication with the aptitude to learn and use other applications.
CPR/AED/First Aid certified, or willing to become certified within 30 days of hire. (We will provide)
Reliable transportation to and from work is required.

JOB SUMMARY

These positions run for 8 weeks, in addition to training days scheduled prior to the start of camp. Camp Counselors will work with children ranging in age from 9-13 years, in groups of 5-20 campers. Activities include but are not limited to; swimming, completing crafts, group games, table activities, nature activities, gym activities, and much more. Counselors are expected to interact with campers throughout their entire shift, lead and/or assist with activities, be a team-player, and ensure campers are always safe. Additional duties include behavior management, clean-up of the camp staff room, craft/activity prep, and other duties as assigned. This is an at-will position.

Position Overview A Half Summer Hero is a position for applicants who have Camp Kingfisher experience, either as a staff member, or at least two years as an LIT (Leader in Training).
