Greater Burlington YMCA company history timeline

1866

It simply means you aren’t 150 years old! It was May 28, 1866, when 13 civic and religious-minded Burlingtonians signed the constitution of the Young Men’s Christian Union – what today is known as the Greater Burlington YMCA.

The preamble to that first Constitution adopted in Burlington, however, notes that their aims “may be better secured by a union, upon common ground.” The “union” envisioned in 1866 Burlington was among various Christian denominations.

1886

In 1886, the YMCA purchased the Strong building at the southwest corner of Church and College streets.

1893

Started in 1893 as Vermont’s first camping program, Camp Abnaki is a boys overnight camp.

1910

A Y in Spokane, Washington held the first Father’s Day celebration in 1910 and the Y worked with others to inspire the creation of the USO and the Peace Corps.

1915

Camp Abnaki has been at the same location in North Hero since 1915.

1980

By the 1980’s, the Y had become Vermont’s largest childcare provider and remains so today.

2016

Proceeds support the Greater Burlington YMCA and SLAMT1D. The Y appreciates the invitation of SLAMT1D to join forces for SLAMFest 2016.
