The San Luis Valley Research Center is part of a network of 7 research centers (10 sites) throughout the state. The first San Luis Valley Research Center was established in 1888 (the same year the main station at Fort Collins was established) on 200 acres of state land near the Rio Grande River, seven miles east of Del Norte. The research center has a continuing commitment to the people of the San Luis Valley ( SLV ) and the State of Colorado to provide research information, conduct extension education and seed certification programs. Beginning in 1940, the principal research activity was focused on selecting potato varieties adaptable to the region. In 1979 a potato breeding program was initiated to complement the selection activity. Current research and extension programs include potato pathology, crop management and field physiology, postharvest physiology, and seed certification. In the early 1920s, the Colorado Certified Seed Potato Growers' Association initiated a seed certification program located on the Colorado State University main campus which was co located at the SLVRC in 1964.

Position Summary
This position assists the Potato Breeding and Selection program in various aspects, including greenhouse, field and laboratory tasks related to the development of new potato cultivars.
Position Minimum Qualifications
-Ability to work in outdoor field, greenhouse, potato cellar, and laboratory environments.
-Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills.
-Ability to work evening and weekend hours during peak season.
-Attention to detail, ability to maintain quality records.
-Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include ability to lift up to 50 lbs. daily during harvest season and will require manual dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and handling.
-Ability to work in environmental conditions to include exposure to weather and noise. Hazards include: working in proximity to moving, mechanical parts and exposure to chemicals used in weed/pest control and fertilization.
Preferred Qualifications
-Experience in an agriculture related field.
-Experience in a lab environment.
-Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license or access to a licensed driver by start date.

Work is done in the field for long periods of time. Workers may assist in handling product weighing up to 60 pounds and lifting to a height of 5 feet. Work required in fields when plants are wet with dew and rain, and may be required during light rain, snow, moderate winds, direct sun, high humidity and extreme temperatures. Assist mechanics with service tasks, parts delivery, and repair efforts as needed.
Order items to fulfill requests promptly and ensure adequate stock of essential supplies.
Wash and clean equipment to maintain quality appearance and operational condition.
Facilitate and direct requests from team members and departments in a timely and respectful manner.
Operate heavy equipment when needed in support of projects or equipment movement.

Must possess ability to communicate with all field personnel including Superintendents, Crew Leads and Foremen.
Health & Safety regulations and procedures including proper lifting techniques.

This position is based on a 45 55-hour workweek.
Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
Travel from site to site will be required.
Work environment will normally be an active construction site. Exposure to dust, noise, high heat, extreme cold, and rain should be expected.
Team member must be physically able to perform repetitive motion and heavy lifting, as described below.
Must be able to maintain effective audio and visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.
Must wear all employer-mandated personal protective equipment, including hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, safety vests, and safety-toed work boots. Other PPE may be required from time to time depending on special safety concerns. All PPE will be provided by the company at no cost to the employee, other than safety boots.
Must be able to hear with or without the use of a hearing device and clearly see at least 30 feet with or without the use of corrective vision lens.
Must be able to work while wearing a respirator if necessary.
Alternate standing and walking on uneven terrain surfaces, such as hillsides, muddy and icy soils, and other working surfaces. Safe negotiation of all types of surface conditions will always be required.
Bending, squatting, and kneeling will be required frequently during a workday.
Continual lifting of up to 50 lbs. for distances of 30 feet or more.
Constant pushing and pulling of certain tools and materials will be required over a day s work.
The team member must be able to differentiate and / or identify colors.
Must have knowledge of occupational hazards in this field and standard safety practices. Must be able to pass the 30 Hour OSHA testing and First Aid/CPR requirements before starting work.
Must complete and meet requirements under the physical demands of this through a pre-employment physical examination.

**Primary Job Duties** (performed on majority of workdays in contract period):
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: Includes some or all of the following. Other duties may be assigned. Haul and spread topsoil, fertilizer, peat moss, and other materials. Dig, rake and screen soil, and fill cold frames and hot beds to prepare for planting. Fill water and other tanks. Plant, spray, weed and water plants, shrubs, and trees. Sow grass seed and plant plugs of sod and cut, roll, and stack sod. Prepare scion and tie buds to assist worker. Trap and poison pests such as moles, gophers and mice. Plant shrubs and plant in containers. Tie, bunch, wrap and pack flowers, plants, shrubs and trees to fill orders. Move containerized shrubs and trees. Dig up shrubs and trees and wrap their roots with burlap. Fold and staple corrugated forms to make boxes used for packing horticultural products. Follow all company policies, procedures and work rules. React appropriately in an emergency situation. Perform all duties as required. Report timely and accurately to supervisor.
Prepare fields/soil for planting. Remove cull stock, debris, tree stumps, brush, ferns, vines and other growth from planting area using tractor, mattocks, brush hooks and/or axes. Plant, cultivate and maintain nursery stock and/or bedding plants in condition for shipping and sale to customers. Pot seedlings or 'liners' by hand or mechanical planter. Propagate plants from cuttings. Perform general plant maintenance. Prune, trim, space, transplant and cull plants to ensure availability of marketable products. Irrigate and apply fertilizer. Pack, label, tag, pull, and store plants by variety. Count, grade, and inventory plants. Prepare plants for digging by tying or wrapping as necessary. Dig plants. Drum lacing and quarter lacing. Wrap burlap or other covering around root balls and secure with twine and/or staples. Crimp wire baskets. Must understand nursery quality control standards and have working knowledge of production procedures. Must harvest crops according to specific standards. Must select and harvest crops pursuant to customer needs. Products must be handled carefully to prevent damage.
Work is done in the field for long periods of time. Workers may assist in handling product weighing up to 60 pounds and lifting to a height of 5 feet. Workers must work on their feet in bent positions for long periods of time. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Work required in fields when plants are wet with dew and rain, and may be required during light rain, snow, moderate winds, direct sun, high humidity and extreme temperatures. Temperatures in fields during working hours can range from 10 to over 100 degrees F. Workers may be required to work during occasional showers not severe enough to stop field operations. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Workers should be able to do the work required with or without reasonable accommodations.

Grade, size, and sort product according to color, shape, size, appearance, feel, and/or quality, in accordance with supervisor's instructions and employer standards. Inspect products for damage/defects and discard inferior products and foreign matter. Place product in bins/trays and other containers according to grade and mark grades on containers. Weigh products and record weight and/or grade. Handle product carefully to prevent damage. Operate equipment safely, with or without direction. Must follow quality control standards and production procedures. Clean/sanitize work station and equipment.
Must have sufficient hand and finger dexterity to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. Must be able to differentiate colors, textures, and other attributes of product to distinguish varieties and identify defects.
Must wear assigned personal protective equipment when required. Must report for work daily wearing work clothing and boots or other durable foot wear. Shorts, bathing suits or other casual clothing not permitted. Workers wearing clothing inappropriate for work will not be permitted to start work.
Employer requires all newly hired employees to take and pass an employer-paid background check. All background checks are conducted uniformly after an initial job offer has been extended and accepted by the new hire.
