GRTC Transit System company history timeline

1866

1866 (January) – Joseph Jackson, Jr., acquired control of the company and resumed full operations the following March.

1887

1887 (March 23) – City Council adopted an ordinance granting a franchise to the Richmond Union Passenger Railway Company to operate an electric operated street railway system in Richmond.

1888

1888 (January 9) – Company opened its first electric line with six cars.

1888 (May 8) – Continuous electric streetcar operation began and remained in effect until buses replaced streetcars.

1944

1944 (December 29) – Virginia Transit Company purchased the transit systems in Richmond and Norfolk and took over operations.

1953

1953 (November) – Diesel powered buses began operating.

1957

1957 (July) – The first air-conditioned buses – the “Frosty Fleet” – began operating.

1973

1973 (April 12) – Federal, state and local funds were used to purchase the assets of the Virginia Transit Company and a new public service company was set up, Greater Richmond Transit Company.

1975

1975 – Service to Henrico County began.

1997

1997 – RideFinders and GRTC begin an association; CARE (Community Assisted Ride Enterprise) begins paratransit service.

1999

In 1999, county officials had asked GRTC to eliminate stops near Forest Hill Avenue because, officials said, they were not properly approved by the county before service began.

2001

2001 – Low-Floor buses increase accessibility for individuals with disabilities and senior commuters; LINK service into Chesterfield County begins as a 3-year pilot program.

2004

2004 – Established a Reduced Fare Program for Senior passengers.

2005

2005 – GRTC launched the new Trip Planner in August.

2007

2007 (May 21) – GRTC launches Express service between Richmond and Fredericksburg.

2013

2013 (March) – GRTC releases the official “GRTC Transit On The Go” mobile app for iPhone and Android.

2013 (July) – GRTC adds first Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered vehicles to its fixed route fleet.

2013 - The CARE Advisory Committee (CAC) reorganizes to provide a customer-based communication link between GRTC and CARE customers.

2015

2015 (March) - "GRTC Pulse" announced as name of Broad Street BRT.

The team began the Semi-Final Design in August 2015 and completed it in October 2015.

2016

2016 - GRTC conducts its largest bus advertising campaign in company history, "GRTC: Did You Know?"

Construction began in Summer 2016.

2017

2017 - GRTC completes multi-year, multi-phase bus stop sign improvement project.

2018

A GRTC bus in Chesterfield County on Friday, November 30, 2018.

2020

2020 (March 16) - GRTC begins new local bus service on Route 1 in Chesterfield County between Falling Creek and John Tyler Community College (Chester).
