GSA company history timeline

1949

Established in 1949, the GSA is responsible for purchasing and distributing supplies to government agencies and maintaining supplies of critical materials.

1960

A government-wide intercity system—the Federal Telecommunication System–was created by the GSA in 1960.

1962

The problem of obsolete office buildings was addressed in 1962.

1970

In 1970, his administration created the Consumer Product Information Coordinating Center, which later became the Federal Citizen Information Center (FCIC). The body was responsible for the distribution of millions of consumer information publications from its facility located in Pueblo, Colorado.

1971

The Federal Buildings Fund was established, in 1971.

1972

In 1972, it established the Automated Data and Telecommunications Service.

1974

The Federal Buildings Fund was established, in 1971. It became operational in 1974 after the GSA gave out its rent bills for the first time to federal agencies.

1978

It also oversees the construction of government buildings and maintains the computer and communications systems used by the federal government. It was rocked by scandal in 1978 when an investigation uncovered bribery, theft, and wasteful management; new rules and procedures were later put into place to prevent such abuses.

1995

The Courthouse Management Group formed by the GSA in 1995 duly managed courthouse constructions.

Another important part of the GSA is the Office of Government Policy (OGP). Created in 1995 this agency consolidates and centralizes all of the GSA's policy-making activities.
