1860

1860 - The Germania Life Insurance Company of America is created by Hugo Wesendonck.

1868

In 1868, Germania became the first United States insurance company to start an agency in Europe.

1909

Founded in 1909, our first insurance policy – valued at $5,000 – was sold a year later.

1911

As operations expanded, the company moved to the Germania Life Insurance Company Building at Union Square in 1911 – a location that would serve as Guardian's headquarters for more than 85 years.

1979

In 1979, Guardian began to regionalize many Home Office functions, and satellite offices are now located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Appleton, Wisconsin; Spokane, Washington; and Norwell, Massachusetts.

2001

2001 - Guardian completes a merger with Berkshire Life Insurance Company of America, increasing its presence in the individual disability income insurance market.

2013

2013 - Guardian acquires ReedGroup, a leader in absence management services.

2014

2014 - Guardian purchases Premier Access Insurance Company, expanding into individual dental markets.

2016

2016 - Guardian completes acquisition of Avēsis, a leading government contract vision, dental, and hearing provider.

2017

In April 2017 the company announced plans to move several hundred employees to Bell Labs in Holmdel, New Jersey.

2017 - Guardian sets up operations in India to provide IT and ITeS services, consulting and business solutions, and help fuel growth.

Our commitments rest on a strong financial foundation, which at year-end 2017 included $8.0 billion in capital and $1.6 billion in operating income.

2018

2018 - Guardian Direct launches, helping consumers find a new, digital way to research and buy dental, vision, accident, and critical illness insurance.

2020

Financial information concerning Guardian as of December 31, 2020, on a statutory basis: Admitted Assets= $68.1 Billion; Liabilities = $60.3 Billion (including $48.9 Billion of Reserves); and Surplus = $7.8 Billion.

In 2020 Guardian was ranked #244 on the Fortune 500 list.

2020 - Guardian celebrates its 160th anniversary.
