We're looking for a
Senior Underwriter, Small Business
Hamilton Select is looking for an experienced underwriter to join our Small Business team, underwriting a variety of general and trade contractors as well as premises driven accounts including real estate, hospitality, and habitational businesses. This position will report into the VP, Small Business, casualty Division Manager.
We prefer to base the position in Richmond, VA, but we will consider a remote working location for appropriately qualified candidates.
Hamilton Select is our US excess and surplus lines insurer based in Richmond, Virginia underwriting hard-to-place accounts in the small and middle-market space through an appointed wholesale broker network.
What you will do
Underwrite challenging and complex new and renewal submissions within underwriting guidelines and make sound risk decisions that balance our growth and profitability targets
Negotiate terms and conditions consistent with our coverage-focused underwriting strategies
Market our insurance products through various communications channels and occasional business travel
Develop mutually beneficial partnerships and nurture relationships with our appointed wholesale brokers
Monitor key metrics and ratios with an eye on efficiency and profitability.
Assist in training and mentoring of less experienced employees
Participate in special projects and corporate initiatives

What you require for the role
Proven small account underwriting experience with underwriting authority, preferably in Excess and Surplus (E&S) Lines
Deep technical knowledge of casualty and other liability lines of insurance
Existing relationships within the wholesale broker community and the demonstrated ability to build effective relationships
Strong internal and external communication skills, both verbal and written
Keen attention to detail, sharp analytical competence, and advanced problem-solving skills
Acute focus on customer service to meet and exceed our best-in-class service aspirations
Bachelor's degree preferred, but not required, with commensurate work experience considered
CPCU designation or other industry coursework preferred, but not required
Ability to travel from time to time to promote our corporate interests

Job Summary
Responsible for evaluating and analyzing group insurance experience and community-rated fully and self-insured accounts. This role involves assessing the financial and operational aspects of group insurance proposals to determine coverage eligibility, pricing, and terms. The role operates with minimal supervision and is expected to be thoroughly versed in all concepts of claims analysis, claims projection, and benefit analysis. Essential Functions
* Review and analyze group insurance accounts, including medical, dental, and other health-related plans.
* Evaluate risks associated with group applications, considering factors such as demographics, claims history, and market trends.
* Assume full responsibility for some Underwriting standard processes as assigned by the manager.
* Develop and present underwriting recommendations based on thorough analysis and risk assessment.
* Collaborate with brokers, agents, and healthcare providers to gather necessary information and clarify underwriting requirements.
* Comfortable collaborating with care management staff to leverage clinical data to improve underwriting projections.
* Train and/or mentor junior Underwriters.
* May help direct the workflow of more junior members of the team.
* Produce high-quality, error-free analyses that are reliable and understandable.
* Produce client-specific reporting promptly, ensuring data is consistent with prior distribution and other related Underwriting material. This reporting function will serve to support renewal underwriting as well as regular and ad-hoc client reporting.
* Regularly attend external client and consultant meetings to explain, defend, and negotiate premiums and Underwriting methodologies for both renewing and prospective clients, rarely requiring support from the Underwriting manager.

Qualifications
Education

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Lending Director, the Senior Small Business Loan Underwriter focuses on Renaissance's core lending service, which is our Small Business Loan Programs. Renaissance loan programs are tailored to the needs of small business owners and entrepreneurs for small or emerging businesses unable to obtain financing from mainstream financial institutions. Loan amounts range up to $250,000. This position requires a high level of technical expertise in due diligence, sound judgement and attention to detail with the ability to analyze complex information to assess credit risk, create appropriate loan structure, and ensure compliance with Renaissance Loan Policy and Procedures in an effort to mitigate loss, delinquency, and overall risk.
Responsibilities:
Underwrite loans in accordance with Renaissance Loan Policy and Procedures.
Manage and oversee the loan process from application to closing ensuring the relevance of the loan documentation provided during the loan application, the soundness of the loan decision through the preparation of financial spreads and credit memorandum and the accuracy of the legal documentation at closing.
Evaluate application data including financial statements, bank statements, tax returns and business and personal credit reports.
Assess credit worthiness and structure loans within established guidelines and expectations.
Ability to work well under pressure and on deadlines, and adapt to changing situations on a daily basis.

As part of the Underwriting Team at Marathon Health, the Underwriter I plays a crucial role in the quoting and proposal development process for our company. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision and guidance of senior underwriters, this position will assist in the development of new opportunity sales proposals.
For each new prospective client or clinic, this position will help develop a full summary of expected clinic costs.
With guidance from senior underwriters, this position will estimate likely savings from the clinic for each client. This savings estimate will be based on a detailed understanding of the client's health care claims experience and Marathon Health's ability to make an impact. The implications of this assessment will be included in presentations to the client.
The Underwriter I will need to understand the medical claims history of each client and their performance in key categories relative to norms (primary care, urgent care, emergency rooms, etc.)
This position will work collaboratively with finance, sales, and operations to recommend pricing that: achieves targeted levels of contribution margin, considers the client's forecasted ROI, and is competitive in the marketplace.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Math, Actuarial, Economics or related field and a minimum of one year relative experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have strong analytical and quantitative skills and notable experience with Microsoft Excel is required

Thorough knowledge in the use of Internet-based loan origination software.
Knowledge of lending principles, practices, rules, regulations, and sales.
Ability to calculate income from paystubs, tax returns and or business returns.
Knowledge of compliance requirements.
Skill in the operation of personal computers and general office equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of people including vendors and other Credit Union team members.
Ability to act independently and confidentially, using discretion and tact.

The ideal candidate has a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma, plus a minimum of two years' experience in consumer lending industry or closely related field.
Compensation: Base starting range: $23.00 to $31.00 hourly commensurate with experience.
Physical Requirements:• Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, walk, twist, and turn.• Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.• Ability to use a computer keyboard and calculator.• Work environment is indoors; majority of the time is spent sitting at a desk.

What will you do?
The role of the underwriter is to assess the risk of our clients based on their individual risk profile (this includes consideration of insurable interest, occupation, medical, financial, part-time activities & travel/territorial risk).
Core outputs:
1. Underwrite risk applications with respect to the client overall risk profile - taking into account previous &/or existing cover.
2. Underwrite & effectively manage communication on sub-standard cases.
3. Request underwriting requirements and/or limit requirements.
4. Placement of cases according to reassurance treaty and related guidelines.
5. Enhance & manage the customer experience through effective, clear & proactive communication &/or collaboration (both written & telephonic)
6. Stay up-to-date with industry trends, regulatory changes, and advancements in AI and analytics.
7. Continuously build expertise on underwriting process & technical skills/knowledge.
What will make you successful in this role?
Qualification:
* Grade 12.
* Relevant qualification will be an advantage.
Experience:
* At least 3 years medical and/or financial underwriting experience.
* Experience in underwriting processes will be an advantage.
* Exposure to underwriting software/programs will be an advantage.
* Exposure to the application of underwriting and re-insurance policy will be an advantage.
* Exposure to financial underwriting and/or business insurance will be an advantage.
