In 1926, Montauk local, Maude Gurney, set out to capture the spirit of his seaside home in order to share it with the outside world.
Monte bought the inn for $200,000 in 1956 from Maude Gurney, a Christian Scientist who opposed alcohol consumption.
He began serving liquor at Gurney’s, started adding rooms, built what he called the Skipper’s Dining Room and, in 1979, opened the spa.
But in 1980, Gurney's planted one more seed that became an essential root of Montauk culture: They built a spa.
In 1982, Gurney’s was converted into a co-op, with its units offered under a time-share arrangement.
The Hotel Detective has been wondering about Gurney's out in Montauk for almost 30 years now, ever since he started at Travel + Leisure in 1986.
Then, in 1994, an investment group tried to take over the property.
In 2019, The Surf Lodge, Gurney's neighbor and another must-visit spot in Montauk, opened a separate wellness space: The Sanctuary.
