Guthy-Renker was founded in November 1988 by Bill Guthy and Greg Renker, who met at the Indian Wells Racquet Club and Resort in Indian Wells, California.
The company fared well in 1990, posting earnings of $36 million.
Renker was invited to testify to a Congressional subcommittee in 1990 regarding ethics in advertising, which led Guthy-Renker and others to form the National Infomercial Marketing Association to create industry standards.
Using that information, they reshot the infomercial, introducing it in July 1991.
The year 1991, however, got off to a difficult start.
1995: Guthy-Renker's Internet subsidiary launches America's Choice Mall, an online retail mall.
In October 1996, the company finalized agreements with several Japanese television networks, allowing its infomercials to reach 23 million Japanese homes.
In 1996, Perelman's stake in the company was resold to News Corp and Guthy-Renker bought it back.
1997-99: Strategic Alliances and Further Growth
Guthy-Renker partnered with National Media Corp. to help market some of its fitness products, which led to a legal dispute that was settled with undisclosed terms in 1997.
In 1998, Guthy-Renker entered into an agreement with Nissho Iwai Corporation, a $79 billion Japanese trading company.
In May 1999, Guthy-Renker formed a strategic partnership with search advertising company LookSmart, who acquired some assets of Guthy-Renker's e-commerce division for $3 million.
In 2011, Guthy-Renker acquired a portion of Paramount Equity Mortgage, a solar energy, insurance and mortgage loans company.
In 2012, Guthy|Renker invested in and partnered with IT Cosmetics — a truly solutions-driven makeup line developed with plastic surgeons and dermatologists — to drive a $1.2B sale to L’Oreal just 4 years later.
