Gwynedd Mercy University company history timeline

1948

Founded by the Sisters of Mercy of Merion in 1948, Gwynedd Mercy University has a long history of helping students make a difference—in their lives and in the lives of others.

Gwynedd Mercy College was established in 1948 as a junior college.

After the death of the Taylors, their daughters sold the mansion, outbuildings and additional land to the Sisters of Mercy in 1948.

1958

1958: Gwynedd-Mercy College earns its first Middle States accreditation.

1973

1973: Men are first admitted to the college.

1981

1981 – Tremendous growth of all Gwynedd Mercy branches—the college, the high school, and the elementary school—required the need for additional space.

1982

1982: The school offers its first graduate program in nursing.

1990

1990: A new sports complex, The Griffin Complex, opens on campus.

2002

2002 – The first Board of Trustees was formed to govern Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School

2005

2005 – The Fourth Institutional Chapter of the Sisters of Mercy developed the five Critical Concerns to address the most vital needs of our time, encouraging our response:

2013

2013: In September, Gwynedd-Mercy College receives university status and is renamed Gwynedd Mercy University.

2015

2015: The home of the Frances M. Maguire School of Nursing and Health Professions is formally named Frances M. Maguire Hall.

2016

2016: GMercyU's longest-tenured and first lay president, Kathleen Owens, PhD, announces retirement from the University.

2017

2017 – The Board of Trustees approved the appointment of the first President and lay leader of Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School

2018

2018 – Construction of a multi-sport complex—with a synthetic turf field, expanded track & field facilities, and a natural grass field—launch of a Rowing program, and creation of internship programs expand academic, athletic, scholarship, and professional opportunities for students.

2018: GMercyU announces the purchase of its new East Campus, a 154-acre property adjacent to its Gwynedd Valley campus.

2019

2019: The University holds the largest Commencement in its history, awarding degrees to more than 880 graduates.

2020

2020 – A five-year strategic plan launched, forever impacting how Gwynedd Mercy women are educated, inspired, and empowered to be merciful in spirit, innovative in thought, and courageous in leadership.

2020: GMercyU donates ventilators, PPE, and other medical supplies to area hospitals at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
