H-E-B is one of the largest independently owned grocery store chains in the country. It has over 400 locations across Texas and Mexico with annual sales of around $23 billion. Though H-E-B was founded over 100 years ago, they are setting a standard for similar stores moving into the digital age. The company puts a big emphasis on its digital platforms and has garnered much success in doing so. The company is regularly recognized in various award ceremonies as a top place to work.
Diversity is key at H-E-B. There are so many different types of opportunities to work for the company and in so many different, culturally rich places. It is also a company where employees, or Partners, as H-E-B refers to them, can really feel as though they are making a difference.
Leon, a Software Developer, said, "More than any other company, H-E-B has character. People matter -- you're more than what you do. There's a real sense of pride in being an H-E-B partner."
H-E-B defines a few values that guide the way they hire, work and live in their communities. Those core values are:
H-E-B truly believes in community development and giving back. But they don't just talk about it, they lead by example. The give to education, disaster relief efforts, hunger relief, through Military: Operation Appreciation, and through Feast of Sharing.
H-E-B refers to its employees as Partners, rather than employees, associates, what have you, because they genuinely feel that it is a partnership that is formed upon hiring. They don't see the work process as a one-way road. H-E-B sets Partners up to contribute to the growth and development of the company as much or as little as they want.
Evan, a Product Director, said, "The opportunity and impact you can have at H-E-B truly is unmatched. We're building a huge team of design-oriented, user-centric problem solvers. Folks who are passionate about shipping solutions to millions of loyal customers. It's the challenge of a lifetime. You need to be hungry to compete against the biggest names out there in grocery and retail."
The problems that Partners work on are dynamic, challenging ones. But the highly motivated Partners of H-E-B relish the opportunity to take those challenges head-on.
Kayla, a Senior Product Manager, said, "The biggest problem the team & I are solving is bringing Curbside & Delivery to the forefront of the H-E-B mobile app. In this modern workflow, customers will be treated to a white-glove experience within the app; searching, browsing, and sorting at your fingertips! I'm personally focused on the C's: Coupons, Cart, & Checkout."
H-E-B has placed a large amount of weight on its diversity. In fact, more than 50% of the engineering staff is made up of women or other diversities. That is unheard of in most markets. H-E-B Director of Product, Sushma Zoellner talked about how, specifically in Austin, the market was ideally posed to create a completely diverse workplace.
"Many employers in Austin, like H-E-B, focus on talent and cultural fit when making a hiring decision. The advantage of this approach for women is a natural ability to connect with potential team members and foster collaborative environments that yield the best outcomes. Our company is also focused on hiring practices that are respectful and inclusive for people of all backgrounds," Sushma said.
And that hiring process Sushma spoke on is definitely part of the reason why H-E-B is consistently ranked in the top companies to work for in their communities. They get the best people, simple as.
Laura, a Software Engineer with H-E-B, said, "What really drives the vibe at our office is our incredible people. Everyone at H-E-B Digital has a unique expertise to learn from, and we are always encouraging each other or willing to offer a helping hand. It's the same friendly attitude I know from decades of shopping at H-E-B, and it's a true joy to be a part of as a member of our digital team."
Some of the ways that H-E-B takes care of its Partners are with a 10% discount on all H-E-B branded goods, 401k and stock plan, and health plans that cover you and your family. Some other perks and benefits are:
Additionally, Partners get free breakfast on Mondays and Fridays, and free lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The company also helps with relocation if necessary and has a tuition reimbursement program.
There is also ample room to grow and learn new skills at H-E-B. Kedar, Director of E-Commerce Fulfillment and Innovation, said, "When I first started at H-E-B, I was in a completely different role, in a completely different department. Your career at H-E-B can be as defined, or as undefined, as you want it to be."
On the tech side of things, which is growing more and more at H-E-B, Partners get the benefit of working on really interesting and unique problems. And, through collaboration and innovation, they get to find even more interesting and unique solutions. Angela, Director of UX Design, said, "At H-E-B, the scope of interesting challenges is big. We're building a team that is passionate about making an impact on users, the organization, and want careers where they can stay curious and work on problems spanning many verticals of expertise.
