H.J. Russell & Company company history timeline

1962

In 1962 Russell solidified its building activity with the establishment of the H.J. Russell Construction Company.

1972

In 1972 he joined the Omni Group, which purchased two major professional sports franchises: the Atlanta Flames of the National Hockey League and the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball League.

1973

1973: H.J. Russell & Company makes the first Black Enterprise top 100 list.

1974

1981

By 1981 Russell was well-recognized for his success.

1982

The Atlanta University School of Business inducted him into their Entrepreneurs Hall of Fame in 1982.

1985

The Georgia State University's College of Business Administration inducted him into the Business Hall of Fame in 1985.

1986

In 1986 he was the Atlanta Business League's Chief Executive Office of the Year.

1986: Company opens a branch in Birmingham, Alabama.

1987

The H.J. Russell division responsible for residential property development saw impressive growth as well, and in 1987 H.J. Russell & Company renovated and enlarged its own corporate offices to more than 42,000 square feet.

1992

In 1992 Herman Russell became part owner of Atlanta Hawks basketball team.

1996

In 1996 Russell announced that he would step aside as company CEO, and that the position would be taken over by R.K. Sehgal, who would also be named vice-chairman of the firm.

1997

By the time of his retirement in 1997, Russell had built a conglomerate that included construction, property management, real estate development, airport concessions, and communications companies stretching across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

1998

He and Russell reportedly failed to agree on a vision for the firm, and by the end of 1998 Russell had returned to the CEO's office.

1999

In 1999 he contributed a total of $4 million to the entrepreneurship programs of Clark Atlanta University, Georgia State University, Morehouse College, and his alma mater Tuskegee Institute.

2001

In 2001, he continued his personal investment in the revitalization investment of his company’s neighborhood, including construction of The Castleberry Inn (now the Clarion Inn & Suites Atlanta Downtown), Legacy Lofts, Intown Lofts, and Paschal’s Restaurant.

2002

Herman J. Russell was interviewed by The HistoryMakers on March 15, 2002.

2014

Herman Russell passed away on November 15, 2014, at the age of 83.

Through working with his father and watching how he ran his plastering business, he felt the urgency and necessity to create jobs during the difficult economic times, and that is when his entrepreneurial spirit was born, which lasted throughout his life until his passing in 2014.

2021

‘Building Atlanta: The Story of Herman J. Russell’ will be airing on Delta Studio until May 31, 2021 and will be featured within the airline’s “Must See Documentaries” spotlight collection.
