They hire nice peop!e and I enjoy my co workers
work is primarily seasonal and in my area the tax preparers are expected to not only prepare the taxes but to answer phones, take payments, clean the bathrooms, vacuum the office as well as take continuing yearly continuing education to maintain Federal and state licences and do this for a base pay under what local fast food workers get and in theory there is a bonus but a co-worker who has worked for Block for 25 years who now has more clients than she had 10 years ago and the returns are more expensive, so she generates more money for the company, recently came across her W-2 from 10 years ago and she made made more money then working less hours and with fewer clients. The only benefit recent hires actually get is minimal sick leave, but no one in management that I have contacted knows how to submit it. The upper level management is paid extremely well and they get very good benefits, I have been told. But it does not filter down. We are not even provided with a break room with a sink in my office.
I do get any. They even stopped providing coffee for staff and cluents.
I had one great manager who really cared about everyone. The rest only care about their bottom line
Try treating employees like respected members of company rather than disposable low cost machines
I never "prepare! People take me as I am. I am good with clients and co-workers, knowledgable, honest and hard working. I work at Block despite drawbacks to get out of the house and my best friend works in my office. I like a little extra money, but could live without this job
Not sure about the industry average, but as I said I would get more at any fast food restaurant
Never cared about that people are who they are. Color origin and first language are not important only who a person is inside. Some years my office is all one color sometimes one gender sometimes a mixture. I just do not want to work with lazy or dishonest people the rest is decoration for the soul
I like solving problems and helping people. So if someone comes in and thinks they owe a lot of money but I get them a refund or I can help them otherwise I am thrilled
Fast paced, co-workers were team players, valued service
Not full-time annual job
Lots of overtime during the tax season
Great co-workers on a local level. Very dedicated, caring people who are wiling to help each other. Also some great office managers and district managers on the local level.
Same theme as many corporations today--corporate does not really care about the employees who are responsible for producing revenue and interfacing with clients. Block talks about valuing tax professionals; yet the tax preparers are squeezed every year. Two great examples---first take a look online at salaries for Block. District General Managers average roughly $120K per year and do not do taxes. Tax professionals with 2-3 years of experience make $14-$15 per hour during tax season (January-April) and are paid $10 per hour to work limited hours the other 8 months. All Block tax professionals are required to take 8 weeks per year off without pay. All Block tax professionals are required to complete a minimum of 19 hours of continuing education per year. It must be completed on your own time without pay, and Block even charges their tax professionals $35 per year to access the continuing education system.
You can file your own taxes for free.
Great management. Promoting feedback between co-workers. Flexible.
Working on Sundays but it wasn’t bad. I would just prefer not to personally.
