Key Responsibilities
Performance Support - Assist crew in completing contract required tasks. Position Summary:
In partnership with the Town of Stratford, the WildLife Guard CrewLeader will be responsible for the direct supervision, training, and execution of an Audubon Connecticut youth employment program.
This position focuses on management efforts taking place at the Great Meadows Marsh and on Long Beach, both in Stratford, CT. Great Meadows is a unit of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge and approximately 700-acres in size, making this Globally Important Bird Area one of the largest mostly un-ditched salt marsh in CT. Since fall 2021, there has been a massive restoration effort underway, which aims to control invasive plant species, improve tidal flow, and create habitat that is beneficial to a host of plants and animals.
Long Beach is a priority mainland nesting area in the state for federally threatened Piping Plover, state threatened Least Tern, and state threatened American Oystercatcher. This local park is also popular with both anglers and residents. CrewLeaders (2) will supervise a team of eight local high school students, participating in the Wildlife Guards Program. The program trains, mentors, and employs local youth to monitor nesting shorebirds, restore habitat, and engage visitors, families, and friends about the project areas and their wildlife.
This is a seasonal, part-time position working Tuesday through Saturday (20-30 hrs/week) starting May 12th and ending August 22nd. Note: Audubon staff will provide two weeks of paid training to CrewLeaders at the beginning of the WildLife Guards Program. The position is based in Stratford, CT.

Essential Functions
The WildLife Guard CrewLeader, through training and supervision of high school students participating in Audubon's youth employment program, will assist conservation scientists with the monitoring and stewardship of critical shoreline habitat. This position is ideal for an early career professional. CrewLeader duties include:
Weekend work will be required (Saturdays). Holiday work is not required.
Mentoring, motivating, and inspiring the students to work as part of the employment program in a professional manner.
Facilitating team building and helping students work through challenging situations.
Developing and implementing public outreach programs (e.g., nature walks, seine netting, touch tank, scavenger hunt, arts and crafts, tabling).
Every week (or as is required) creating a schedule of activities (e.g., outreach programs, bird monitoring, and habitat restoration work) to be performed daily by students as well as educational enrichment. This shall also include testing for student program participants at the beginning and end of the field season.
Tracking program metrics (e.g., number of people engaged, materials distributed, pledges to protect birds signed and hours spent monitoring site.)
Provide content for applicable Audubon CT social media.
Collecting and entering data into online databases (e.g., Microsoft Excel & Google Sheets).
Writing weekly reports detailing management activities at each site.
Coordinating monitoring efforts with other Audubon CT staff and partners.
Organizing and leading volunteer events as needed. Should be comfortable speaking and facilitating group discussion.
Additional duties may be assigned to support other aspects of the youth employment program.
Qualifications and Experience:
Experience guiding and mentoring students while fostering positive learning environments.
Experience supervising high school aged students required (comparable/equivalent experience may be considered).
Coursework in the active pursuit of a degree in biology, wildlife management, or related field preferred.
Experience leading environmental education and public outreach programs highly desirable
Experience and ability to communicate clearly via written, spoken and graphical means along with responding to communications in a prompt and timely manner. CrewLeaders should be comfortable interacting with students, their families, the public, and project partners in a professional manner.
Good planning skills desired. In the event of poor weather, CrewLeaders will need to coordinate with the Program Manager and have their teams work at a pre-determined “classroom setting” location when fieldwork is not possible.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point) and Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms) software required.
Knowledge of waterbirds & native/invasive plant species found in CT is desirable.
Knowledge of coastal ecosystems is highly desirable.
Fluency in Spanish a plus.
Willingness to traverse in a variety of coastal terrain and able to maneuver with at least 30 lbs with or without accommodation.

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy's mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Under the supervision of the Regional Manager, the CrewLeader is responsible for implementing Trail and related facility construction, reconstruction, and land management projects. This position manages and motivates trail crews, which consist of crew members and/or volunteers. The CrewLeader is responsible for behavior management and fostering positive crew morale through consistent teamwork. This position will provide collaborative leadership for the crew, ensure safety procedures are followed and communicate with partners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Implement Trail construction, reconstruction, and maintenance projects in cooperation with A.T clubs and partner agencies.
Determine logistical needs in advance to ensure that appropriate tools, equipment, materials, and other necessary resources are available to complete assigned projects.
Ensure volunteer and/or staff trail crew members are trained in and implement best practices in Trail design, construction, reconstruction, and maintenance according to ATC and land managing agency standards.
Ensure safe and sanitary conditions at field camps and work sites, transport crews safely, and respond appropriately to any emergency situations that may arise.
Promote an atmosphere in which all crew members feel welcomed, motivated, safe, and included, and where participation and contributions from all are valued and appreciated.
Follow the direction of designated supervisors with respect to duties, logistics, timetables, projects, submit biweekly timesheets, weekly hour and project reports, and perform other duties as assigned.
Ensure purchases of food, supplies, gear, and materials follow ATC's financial procedures.
Travel on foot over rough terrain and for long distances while carrying equipment in possible inclement weather.
Assist Basecamp Coordinator with volunteer transportation, volunteer basecamp orientation, routine camp maintenance or other duties as scheduled or required.
Qualifications
Two or more seasons of front/backcountry camping or working outdoors.
At least one season of trail crewleadership.
At least one season of experience in building/rebuilding trails: constructing new sidehill, stone steps or cribbing, log steps or cribbing, improving drainage, addressing erosion, etc.
Ability to manage and be responsible for all aspects of a trail crew.
In good mental and physical health, ability to hike up to 10 miles per day in steep, mountainous terrain.
Commitment to ATC management and resource protection efforts.
Proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to effectively communicate with individuals, groups and partners.
Ability to live independently and work in a remote area with minimal supervision.
Strong hiking and outdoor experience.
Experience working with volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.
Ability to hike up to 10 miles per day in steep, mountainous terrain.
Basic knowledge of Appalachian Trail Conservancy's cooperative management system preferred.
Comfortable working multiple days outdoors in frequently adverse weather conditions.
Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator desirable, awareness training is provided.
Current Wilderness First-Aid, or higher and CPR certification is preferred training will be provided.
Willingness to participate in additional required training which includes but not limited to: USFS chainsaw & crosscut saw certification, WFR/WFA, advanced rockwork, rigging, safe driving.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy's mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Under the supervision of the Regional Manager, the Assistant CrewLeader is responsible for co-leading with the CrewLeader and implementing Trail and related facility construction, reconstruction, and land management projects. This position manages and motivates trail crews, which consist of crew members and/or volunteers. The CrewLeader is responsible for behavior management and fostering positive crew morale through consistent teamwork. This position will provide collaborative leadership for the crew, ensure safety procedures are followed and communicate with partners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Implement trail construction, reconstruction, and maintenance projects in cooperation with A.T clubs and partner agencies.
Works with the CrewLeader to determine logistical needs in advance to ensure that appropriate tools, equipment, materials, personnel, and other necessary resources are available to complete assigned projects.
Ensure volunteer and/or staff trail crew members are trained in and implement best practices in Trail design, construction, reconstruction, and maintenance according to ATC and land managing agency standards.
Ensure safe and sanitary conditions at field camps and work sites, transport crews safely, and respond appropriately to any emergency situations that may arise.
Promote an atmosphere in which all crew members feel welcomed, motivated, safe, and included, and where participation and contributions from all are valued and appreciated.
Follow the direction of designated crewleader or supervisors with respect to duties, logistics, timetables, projects, submit biweekly timesheets, process and submit photos and crew narratives weekly, and perform other duties as assigned.
May assume the duties of CrewLeader in their absence.
Ensure purchases of food, supplies, gear, and materials following ATC's financial procedures.
Travel on foot over rough terrain and for long distances while carrying equipment in possible inclement weather.
Assist Basecamp Coordinator with volunteer transportation, volunteer basecamp orientation, routine camp maintenance or other duties as scheduled or required.
Qualifications
Two or more seasons of front/backcountry camping or working outdoors.
At least one season of trail crewleadership.
At least one season of experience in building/rebuilding trails: constructing new sidehill, stone steps or cribbing, log steps or cribbing, improving drainage, addressing erosion, etc.
Ability to manage and be responsible for all aspects of a trail crew.
In good mental and physical health, ability to hike up to 10 miles per day in steep, mountainous terrain.
Commitment to ATC management and resource protection efforts.
Proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to effectively communicate with individuals, groups and partners.
Ability to live independently and work in a remote area with minimal supervision.
Strong hiking and outdoor experience.
Experience working with volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.
Ability to hike up to 10 miles per day in steep, mountainous terrain.
Basic knowledge of Appalachian Trail Conservancy's cooperative management system preferred.

Position Summary

Operate a van to deliver tools and materials to work sites.
Enter all required data into the Salesforce database and document activities in a timely manner to include case notes on trainee progress and observations, up to date participant contact information, demographic, and other profile data, and work project updates on progress and completion.
Participate in case conferencing with other employment and program staff
Document trainee feedback and testimonials.

Minimum Qualifications

Work hours for this position may be subject to change based on organizational needs. Employees may be required to adjust their schedules, including working outside of standard business hours, as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.

About Your Work Day
CrewLeaders lead by example as onsite supervisors/coaches for groups of 3-5 team members.

Job Description
Starting in early-April and going through October, the Gardens & Landscaping department creates, maintains, preserves and promotes the beauty of the Chautauqua Institution grounds as well as its habitats and ecosystems. From rain gardens, buffer gardens and wetlands to 50+ landscaped gardens and 200+ annual planters there is a significant diversity of plant material, design and purpose. The roots of the department are teamwork and sustainability which make the campus blossom, creating natural beauty throughout the 250-acre campus.
About Your Compensation
Compensation for this position starts at $16.00/Hour and, with demonstrated experience and qualifications, candidates may earn up to $18.50/Hour.
About Your Work Day
CrewLeaders lead by example as onsite supervisors/coaches for groups of 3-5 team members.
Have a general knowledge of plants and their maintenance needs.
Ensure new crew members can locate and get to correct sites on the grounds.
Prioritize & delegate tasks to crew members appropriately.
Keep the crew on task and working as a team.
Mentor & empower crew members to improve their knowledge or skills by demonstrating proper techniques for a variety of gardening tasks such as; weeding, flower bed & box preparation, planting, pruning, mulching, watering, hedge trimming and leaf removal.
Track and record time spent at each site throughout the day and help crew fill out time sheets properly at the end of each day.
Report work completed and work still needing to be finished to the supervisor at the end of the day.
Provide corrective feedback to others in an educational and positive manner.
Report any staff issues that need to be addressed by the supervisor.
Operate a tractor with front loader to load materials in trucks. (Training will be provided)
Encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members.
About the Referral Program
Chautauqua Institution's Referral Bonus Program is a talent solution to recruit, develop, and retain a diverse workforce that encompasses all the skills and experience necessary to deliver on our goals and objectives. Chautauqua Institution will provide a $500 referral bonus (less taxes) for active employees referring a new candidate who is hired and remains employed for at least 90-days from the first physical date of work. About This Position
Mass Audubon is seeking to fill seasonal CrewLeader positions to train and supervise staff and volunteers in conducting research, monitoring, management, and protection of coastal birds and other natural resources. This is a field-based position with 4-5 field days per week with some office work for reporting and data responsibilities and offers opportunities to take on varied projects as needed. Responsibilities
Supervise field crew (field technicians and ranger staff) to meet research, wildlife management and education objectives of the Coastal Waterbird Program
Train and supervise field crew in collection and management of biological data on nesting, foraging and migrating species of coastal waterbirds
Accomplish the wildlife management, protection, and education objectives of the Coastal Waterbird Program
Manage target site visitation frequency, including coordination of accessing sites via kayaks or boats (if applicable)
Assist with sanctuary-based Coastal Waterbird Program staff throughout the region
Assist in management of databases including abundance, productivity and behavioral data; create and maintain online maps for nesting and management activities
Compile data for state plover, tern, and oystercatcher census forms and write summary reports for specific sites on results and management activities
Interact with beachgoers regularly to provide information regarding regulations and beach ecology; some formal outreach initiatives may be possible depending on location and capacity
Supervise and conduct research on special projects as directed

Compensation, Benefits and Perks
This position's pay range is $20.75-$22.50/hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This position is eligible for health insurance benefits. Shared staff housing may be available for rent at some locations. Housing is available on a first come, first serve basis.
Work Schedule
This position starts on March 23, 2026 and ends on August 21, 2026. The schedule is typically 35-40 hours per week, 8:00am-4:00pm with some earlier days (6:00am-2:00pm) and later days (10:00am-6:00pm) for special monitoring projects and training. Work on weekends and holidays is (specifically Memorial Day and Fourth of July), with variable hours and schedule due to weather and site-specific requirements. Requests for a limited number of weekend days off may be considered.
Other Requirements
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check. A Motor Vehicle Record Check may be required if applicable. Staff members must complete all designated training sessions throughout the season, as applicable to their responsibilities.
