The first students arrived in the autumn of 1899 and resided in the Hackley home, today called Hackley Hall.
In the spring of 1899, a board of trustees was formed and very shortly thereafter it selected its first headmaster.
In September 1904, the board voted to purchase and install a school bell.

Students may repeat the course so as to take both curricula, but may not repeat the same curriculum. It will begin by looking at the horror of 1914; on million total casualties inflicted over a two-month period, numbers so staggering that the belligerent nations were forced to dig in across a massive line stretching from the English Channel to Switzerland.
Hackley School was no longer listed in the Kalamazoo County school directories after 1956.
In 1968 it was being used for a rooming house, but appeared to be a private home in a 1981 photograph. It was built on land donated by Julius Hackley, and was thought to be more than a hundred years old in 1958.
During the rebuilding of Goodhue, the Middle/Upper School Library was located in King Memorial Chapel; the Lower School Library opened in 2007 in the Santomero Library on the second floor of the Kathleen Allen Lower School.
In September 2010, Goodhue Memorial Hall reopened, with the Sternberg Library and computer labs located on the new second floor.
