Steve Berman co-founded Hagens Berman in 1993 after his prior firm refused to represent several young children who consumed fast food contaminated with E. coli.
In November 1998, the initial proposed settlement led to a multi-state settlement requiring the tobacco companies to pay the states $260 billion and to submit to broad advertising and marketing restrictions – the largest civil settlement in history.
Hagens Berman LLP welcomes partner Thomas Sobol to the firm and opens its Boston office in June of 2002, adding to the firm's focus in the area of pharma fraud lawsuits and bringing on the leading litigator in drug pricing cases.
In 2004, the firm culminated a class action filed on behalf of Hungarian holocaust survivors who had thousands of family heirlooms and personal property stolen or mishandled in the aftermath of World War II.
When news broke in 2015 of Volkswagen’s massive diesel emissions-cheating scandal, Hagens Berman represented thousands of consumers and took a leading role on the plaintiffs’ steering committee that would finalize a $14.7 billion, record-breaking settlement for owners.
In March of 2016, the United States Environmental Protection Agency asked Mercedes to explain emissions levels in its diesel BlueTEC vehicles, following the firm’s class-action lawsuit unearthing its emissions cheating.
