Orthopedic Unit:
Located on 9 Courtyard- a large, mostly private room, 36 bed unit and 9 Waldemere, a 32 bed unit. We provide care to adult patients with a focus on elective joint surgeries, pre and post operative fracture management, traumatic fracture management, as well as bone disorders, spine surgeries, complex infections of the bone, and a wide variety of medical and other surgical patients. Orthopedics is a fast paced and fun place to learn and grow for someone to healthcare and a great place to continue to learn and grow for experienced staff!
Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilty (IRF):
A Patient Care Technician (PCT) in SMH Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility plays an essential role in supporting both patients and the nursing team. They provide direct, hands-on care that promotes patient recovery and independence. Their responsibilities include assisting patients with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, mobility, and toileting, as well as taking vital signs, monitoring intake and output, glucose checks, foley care, and ensuring patient safety. PCTs also help patients participate in therapy sessions by preparing them for rehabilitation activities and offering encouragement throughout the recovery process. In addition, they collaborate closely with nurses and therapists to report changes in patient condition, maintain a clean and safe environment, and support the overall rehabilitation plan of care.
Medical Renal, Diabetic, Wound Care Unit (7WT):
Focus on patients with a primary diabetes, renal, or wound care related diagnosis. Specializing in complex wound care, peritoneal dialysis, and the management of medically stable Diabetic Ketoacidosis and Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar Non-Ketotic Syndrome and intravenous insulin drips.
General Surgical Unit (6ET):
General Surgical is a 49 bed unit that provides care to the adult patient, focusing on care including but not limited to surgical and medical patients with urological, major/minor abdominal, Bariatric, and GYN procedures.
Medical 1:
Located on 10 Waldemere Tower is a 32 bed inpatient/observation unit, serving the adult patients that are acutely ill or injured. The unit cares for patients who primarily require general medical care and treatments. The continuum of care extends from the time of admission to preparing the patient for discharge to home, extended care facility, to home with home health care, to post discharge follow-up and, in-house hospice with care directed toward "comfort measures" and end of life. Low volume procedures performed by staff include PCA pain control management, tracheostomy care, tracheal suctioning, set-up and maintenance of chest tubes, and oxygen administration including high flow and Opti-flow oxygen delivery.
Medical 2:
Medical 2 is a 32 bed unit located on 8 Waldemere Tower and is a part of the six-unit Medical Surgical Division. Medical 2 was created as a new acute, inpatient unit in January of 2021 and has since created a culture of teamwork always striving for safe, quality patient care. The patient population on Medical 2 includes all adults eighteen years and older with any assortment of medical conditions, including but not limited to GI bleed, falls, altered mental status, pain, shortness of breath and any number of infections. With that, Medical 2 is an excellent place for newer nurses and techs to gain a wide variety of experiences and skill sets before pursuing a career in a specialty area or experienced staff to find their forever unit.
Medical 3 (4NW):
Medical 3 is a 29-bed unit located on 4 Northwest and is a part of the seven-unit Medical Surgical Division. Medical 3 is a new inpatient acute care unit as of December 2022, and we are excited to build a team of professionals striving to provide excellent care to our patients and families! The patient population on Medical 3 includes all adults eighteen years and older with any assortment of medical conditions, including but not limited to: kidney disease, falls, altered mental status, pain, shortness of breath and various infections. We believe a Medical Surgical foundation enhances your critical thinking, expands on an array of skills, and broadens your knowledge base, while providing opportunities for growth in our Magnet organization.
Neurology:
The Patient Care Technician is a crucial member of the team in providing the best patient care alongside a registered nurse. Our technicians will be responsible for vitals at designated times during the day, along with collecting blood sugars to report to the nurse. They will assist patients with toileting and hygiene throughout the course of the shift. They will assist patients with ambulation at times and be responsible for accurate account of intakes and outputs. The patient care technician must be versatile, and willing to play their part in a teamwork dynamic. There is potential to grow into a multi-skilled technician to pursue the next level of training.
The Multi- Skilled Technician performs the same tasks as a Patient Care Technician, but they will also be trained as a Cardiac Monitor Technician/ Unit Coordinator. In this position they will watch the cardiac monitors for all patients on the unit and notify the nurse if a rhythm changes. While not in the monitor room, they will answer patients' call lights, complete consultation calls, manage the unit phone, and assist in paperwork for the shift. This is a versatile position, where the employee is able to fulfill either position when asked.
Patient Population:Patients with a primary neurology diagnosis requiring complex nursing care including but not limited to: Cardiac & Neuro medication and drip management, Continuous cardiac monitoring, Continuous EEG monitoring, Acute cardiac arrhythmias, Chest pain, Seizures, Stroke, Post-operative spinal surgeries, Myasthenia gravis, Guillian Barre, Craniotomy, Post brain embolization and Pre/Post Cardiac procedures including Pacemaker implantation, cardioversion, ablations, transesophageal echocardiograms, & catheterizations
Respiratory Progressive Care Unit:

The Patient Care Technician is a crucial member of the team in providing the best patient care alongside a registered nurse. They will assist patients with toileting and hygiene throughout the course of the shift. They will assist patients with ambulation at times and be responsible for accurate account of intakes and outputs. The MST must be versatile, and willing to play their part in a teamwork dynamic.
The Multi Skilled Technician will be trained as a Cardiac Monitor Technician (CMT) and a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC). In the CMT position, they will watch the cardiac monitors for all patients on the unit and notify the nurse if a rhythm changes. In the HUC position they will answer patients' call lights, complete consultation calls, manage the unit phone, and assist in paperwork for the shift. This is a versatile position, where the employee is able to fulfill either position when asked. Patient Population:Patients with a primary respiratory diagnosis requiring complex nursing care including but not limited to:BIPAP/CPAP, Tracheostomies, Chest Tubes, High Flow O2, COPD/CHF Patients, Lung Cancer Patients and Cardiac Monitoring
Trauma PCU:
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) plays an essential role in supporting the delivery of high-quality, compassionate care under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
As a vital member of the trauma progressive care team, the PCT partners with nursing staff to ensure excellent patient outcomes. Responsibilities include obtaining vital signs at designated intervals, performing blood glucose checks, assisting patients with toileting and hygiene, and supporting safe ambulation. The PCT is also accountable for accurately monitoring and documenting patient intake and output. This role requires flexibility, strong teamwork, and a commitment to patient-centered care.
Upon demonstrating competency as a Patient Care Technician, team members will have the opportunity to be promoted to a Multi-Skilled Technician (MST). In this advanced role, the MST is trained to function as both a Cardiac Monitor Technician (CMT) and a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC). CMT role: Monitors cardiac rhythms for all unit patients and promptly alerts the assigned nurse of any changes. HUC role: Manages patient call lights, answers unit phones, coordinates consultations, and provides clerical support to ensure smooth unit operations.
This promotion allows staff to grow professionally while providing comprehensive support for both patients and the care team.
Patient Population: Trauma PCU patients requiring complex, progressive care, including but not limited to: Advanced respiratory support (BiPAP/CPAP, High-Flow Oxygen, tracheostomies, chest tubes); cardiac monitoring; post-trauma patients with multi-system injuries; and orthopedic injuries requiring traction.
Cardiac Progressive 2:
Cardiac Progressive 2 has dynamic staff that provide complex care to our cardiac progressive patients. We are a Nurse Residency unit with a focus on mentoring novice nurses transitioning into the acute care setting. We have a dedicated charge nurse, clinical pharmacist, case manager, and social worker on our unit to support the patients' needs and provide a resource for the nursing staff. Patients with a primary cardiac diagnosis requiring complex nursing care including but not limited to:Continuous cardiac monitoring, Acute abnormal arrhythmias, Cardiac medication and cardiac drips management, Pre/Post cardiac procedures: Pacemaker, angiography, cardioversions, ablations, Acute Heart Failure and Acute myocardial infarction
Cardiac Progressive 3:
The Patient Care Technician is a crucial member of the team in providing the best patient care alongside a registered nurse. Our technicians will be responsible for vitals at designated times during the day, along with collecting blood sugars to report to the nurse. They will assist patients with toileting and hygiene throughout the course of the shift. The technician will be in a rotation for providing specialized showers for post-surgical patients with active drains and pacing wires. They will assist patients with ambulation at times and be responsible for accurate account of intakes and outputs that are crucial in cardiac patients. The patient care technician must be versatile, and willing to play their part in a teamwork dynamic. There is potential to grow into a multi-skilled technician to pursue the next level of training.
The Multi- Skilled Technician performs the same tasks as a Patient Care Technician, but they will also be trained as a Cardiac Monitor Technician/ Unit Coordinator. Cardiac Progressive 4:
The Patient Care Technician carries out delegated skills of daily living that are within those functions limited by law to unlicensed nursing personnel. Our 46-bed cardiac progressive care unit consists of cardiac ischemia, myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy, cardiac dysrhythmia, and congestive heart failure patient populations. The team-based culture on our cardiac progressive care unit has a dedicated Charge Nurse, Lead RN, Clinical Pharmacist, Case Manager, Respiratory Therapist, and Mobility Technician to support the patients' needs and provide many resources for our nursing staff. Allowing for better patient to PCT ratios.

Mother Baby Unit:
The Multi-Skilled Technician (MST) in the Mother-Baby Unit plays a key supportive role in the care of postpartum individuals and their newborns. Working under the supervision of licensed nursing staff, the MST performs a variety of clinical, technical, and supportive tasks to promote comfort, safety, and healing in a patient- and family-centered environment.
This role blends basic patient care, clerical support, and unit coordination duties, providing essential support to both patients and the healthcare team.
Women's and Peds Unit:
PCTs/MSTs play a vital role in providing care on our 28-bed unit, serving a diverse patient population including medical-surgical women, mother-baby (MBU) patients, and pediatrics. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, taking vital signs, performing glucose checks, collecting specimens, providing Foley catheter care, assisting with activities of daily living, answering call lights, and maintaining patient safety. PCTs/MSTs work closely with the healthcare team in a dynamic, team-oriented environment.
Required Qualifications
* Require one of the following: 1.) Florida licensure as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Paramedic, or a military Hospital Corpsman, Combat Medic Specialist, or Aerospace Medical Service Specialist; or National licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT); which must be maintained active during employment; or 2.) Nursing students who are eligible for CNA exam are required to: a.) currently be enrolled in or a graduate of an accredited school of Nursing (RN/LPN); b.) if enrolled, have completed the first semester of clinical for ASN/BSN degree or completion of first trimester for LPN; and c.) cannot be currently licensed in the U.S. as a RN or LPN; or 3.) Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification: Provide certification of successful completion of a Florida State Board approved program and successfully obtain a Florida CNA license within 120 days of graduation.
