Hamilton Health Care System company history timeline

1921

The long-awaited Hamilton Memorial Hospital, named for Crown Cotton Mills founder George W. Hamilton, Sr., was dedicated May 12, 1921, on National Hospital Day.

Hamilton Memorial Hospital opened to public acclaim on National Hospital Day, May 12, 1921.

1935

Thanks to the local Civitan Club, city and county government, and generous citizens, the Civitan Hospital board agreed in 1935 to re-open the hospital.

1951

On July 1, 1951, the Dalton City Council adopted a resolution creating a Hospital Authority, and received funds from the Federal Hill-Burton Act.

1954

1954 – Nora Frances Henderson Hospital opened as a 322-bed maternity hospital on the same site

1955

Efforts to build a hospital in Hamilton, Texas began in 1955.

1956

With local funds of some $450,000 (including funds from a dozen area physicians) and a Hill-Burton grant amounting to $900,000, the new 73-bed Hamilton Memorial Hospital was dedicated August 5th, 1956.

1957

Citizens George Golightly, Bill Manning, Floyd Campbell, Haskell Harelik, Guffie Barkley, C.M. Hatch, W.P. Lawson and Doctor C.C. Cleveland held the first planning and development meeting in the basement of the First Baptist Church in January 1957.

1960

1960 – When tuberculosis treatment changed and patients no longer required years of bed rest, Chedoke became a general hospital

1972

With the technical assistance of Harrisburg Hospital, Hamilton applied for and received a $1.25 million grant from the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare to provide health services in 1972.

1972 – McMaster University Medical Centre opened and McMaster University’s medical school and its innovative curriculum were created

1975

Noted hospital trustee Jackson P. Turner, led the way in the 1975 creation of the Whitfield Healthcare Foundation – an independent affiliate seeking private gifts for Hamilton.

1982

In 1982, Harris Methodist bought out shares and the hospital became Harris Methodist Hamilton Hospital.

In 1982, the hospital was renamed Hamilton Medical Center to reflect its expanded role as a regional health care provider.

1984

1984 – The cancer clinic, located at the Henderson General Hospital, became known as the Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre

1986

In October 1986, Hamilton realized another major milestone with the opening of the Bradley Wellness Center, a comprehensive fitness, health education, and rehabilitation facility half a block from the Medical Center.

1987

Harris Methodist closed the doors of the hospital on September 30, 1987.

1988

In May 1988, the Hamilton community pulled together to begin raising $250,000.

The Hamilton General Hospital re-opened on September 12, 1988.

1990

On March 12, 1990, the commissioners' court appointed a temporary Hamilton County Hospital District Board consisting of Ramon Haile, Bill Craig, Fay Schrank, David Lengefeld and T.P. Medlock.

1992

In 1992 Hamilton’s Royal Oaks became the region’s first continuing care retirement community.

1992 – The Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre opened in its new building, located beside the Henderson General Hospital

1994

The beginning stages of the hospital’s unique primary care model is established. • 1994: The WLMH midwife program is established.

1997

Hamilton Healthcare System opened a Rural Health Clinic and lab in December of 1997.

1999

Also to assure careful coordination of skilled nursing care, Hamilton acquired the region’s skilled nursing facilities including the development of Regency Park in 1999 at the Royal Oaks’ campus.

**** Healthmate was sold in 1999, which adversely affected Hamilton’s financial condition for several years.

2004

On May 1, 2004, Hamilton Healthcare System purchased memberships from Fitness on the Square adding a fitness center to the growing system.

2008

The clinic was expanded in May 2008 and a renovation completed in July 2008.

On June 30, 2008, Hamilton Healthcare System opened the doors to its state-of-the-art Wellness Center featuring a fitness center, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, physical therapy and a heated salt-water fitness pool.

On October 1, 2008, Hamilton Healthcare System purchased the Hico Clinic.

In 2008 our Board and Executive Staff recognized the need for Hamilton Health Center to meet the growing needs of our community and began planning to acquire a larger, more modern facility.

2008 – St Peter’s Hospital joins Hamilton Health Sciences and continues to provide inpatient, outpatient, and community-based programs and services for seniors.

2008 – Chedoke is no longer an acute care hospital, however, it continues to provide complex continuing care and child and family services to residents of Hamilton and the region

2010

In 2010, Hamilton Physician Group was formed with Hamilton Cardiology Associates as the first joint partnership between physicians and Hamilton.

2010 – Henderson General Hospital is redeveloped and named Juravinski Hospital.

2010 – MUMC specializes in caring for the region’s high-risk women’s health and gastroenterology patients, and is home to McMaster Children’s Hospital, one of the country’s finest and most highly-regarded pediatric hospitals

2013

In 2013, Hamilton Medical Center expanded its Mashburn Cardiac Pavilion to include two catheterization labs and one hybrid suite.

2014

2014 – West Lincoln Memorial Hospital officially joins Hamilton Health Sciences.

2016

• 2016: Our Healthy Future plan submitted to HNHB LHIN, which includes a rebuilt WLMH with a 24-hour Emergency Department, obstetrics and day surgery.

2018

• February 2018: LHIN endorses the proposed program and service model for a rebuilt WLMH. HHS submits plan with three design options to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for review.
