    Responsible for the safe and efficient transfer of petroleum products between barges, ships, and facilities including completion of bills of lading and gauge reports. Responsibilities Monitor product level in tanks, operate diesel engines, operate cargo pumps, operate tank/pipeline valves and operate manual and hydraulic booms. Load 55 gallon drums. Adjust and secure barge lines. Communicate with foreign crews and oil facility personnel. Complete loading and discharge gauge reports. Inspect vessel for Coast Guard and state regulatory compliance. Use of Air purifying respirator, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), air monitoring equipment, hearing protection, VHF radio, hand tools, tow lines, high level alarms and thermometer. Operate diesel engines, cargo pumps, hydraulic booms, cargo gear, gate valves, and butterfly valves. Check oil and water in any equipment on board before putting in use. General barge maintenance and cleanliness. Hydrostatic testing of cargo hoses and piping. Change engine oil and filters. Splice barge lines and boom running gear. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Previous experience as a tank barge PIC on oil barges required. Must have a valid PIC Endorsement and USCG MMC and at least 5 years of tanking experience. Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential with Tankerman PIC endorsement. Valid CPR/First Aid/AED training and certificate. Valid HAZWOPER 24 Hour training and current certificate. Valid state driver's license. Knowledge of Coast Guard and state requirements for transfer operations. Ability to think and respond quickly to emergency situations (oil spills, mechanical failures, etc.). Possess good communication skills by voice and/or visual hand signals. Ability to be self-motivated, work independently and without direct supervision. Knowledge of company safety practices. Ability to maintain professional relations with customers. Knowledge of basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide). Ability to complete accurate paperwork. Must be able to read, speak, and understand English over telephone and/or radio. Job Condition and Environment Must be able to perform the functions set forth in the attached job analysis and possess the stamina to work long hours. Must have physical ability to maneuver cargo hoses, handle barge lines and board vessels by use of an Accommodation ladder, Jacob's ladder or tugboat. Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.) Must not be afraid of heights. Expected Hours of Work Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours. Responsibilities Job Responsibilities and Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Engine Room Work: Preventive maintenance and underway repairs on main engines and gears, pumps, motors, -plumbing, deck machinery (including towing winch(es), and auxiliary generator units. Perform routine periodic maintenance about tug and on barge as needed. Maintain proper liquid levels for tug operations. Perform lubrication services. Monitor and record operating condition of engine room equipment. Maintain daily log with proper readings and times. Wash down engine room weekly and at every decrew. Engine room must be kept clean and ready for operation at all times. Fuel tug. Deck Work: Make up all tows as directed by Captain or Mate. Use the radio. Knot tying, line/wire splicing, make up and handle heaving lines and messengers. Make up and throw heaving lines. Properly tie off barge tows. Give proper direction and distance signals and information. Paint inside and outside of tug on an on-going basis. Other Duties: Loading supplies. General cleanup of tugs and barges. General cooking and galley duties as may be required. Fill out material requisitions and work order forms. Work aboard boats and barges using pike poles, heavy lines, winches, mechanical tools for repairs, paint, thinner, paint brushes/rollers, paint chipping tools, cleaning solvents, kitchen utensils/cookware, power cords. Qualifications Two years previous work experience on marine diesels required. Residence within three (3) hours of Alameda, CA preferred. Must be able to comprehend and respond and carry out specific orders from the captain or mate. Ability to communicate effectively with captain, mate, co-workers, dispatchers, and customers in English. Ability to learn and make application of safety awareness, injury prevention, and firefighting. Carry out essential job responsibilities and duties listed above with a minimum of direction. Must be able to understand and use information contained in cargo information cards and material safety data sheets. Operate all firefighting and lifesaving equipment aboard. Must have or complete firefighting training within 6 months of hire. Valid State Driver's License. Valid first aid/CPR/AED certificate. Complete HAZWOPER training within 30 days of hire. Must be able to read, speak, and understand English over telephone and/or radio. Must be able to work independently and without direct supervision.
