    Responsible for the safe transportation of the assigned barge(s) and for the safety of the cargo, vessel(s) and crew. Responsible for safe docking of ships, (when applicable). Required to perform administrative and supervisory functions. Responsible for maintenance and cleanliness of tug and barge. Responsibilities The job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: * Oversees safety of vessel * Stands wheelhouse watches underway. * Direct crew in performance of drills. * Determine the need for and assign lookouts as necessary. * Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Company policies and regulations. * Prepare, monitor, and update vessel work lists and maintenance schedules. * Ensure all crewmen are performing their duties. * Prepare written reports per company and regulatory agency directives. * Check and approve all requisitions and work orders. * Ensure supplies are used on an efficient manner, inventory and prepare material requisitions * Conduct inspections and monitor tug/barge maintenance activities. * Assign work projects for crew. * Inspect cleanliness of the vessel and barge. * Purchase food for crew. * Work aboard boats and barges using pike poles, heavy lines, winches, mechanical tools for repairs as needed. * Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications * Must be able to read, speak and understand English over radiotelephone and/or radio. * Must be able to communicate in English and effectively direct workers in assigning jobs and seeing them through to completion. * Valid TWIC * Must have a valid first aid certificate. * Must have valid CPR training. * Must have a valid HAZWOPER certificate or complete a 24 hour training course within 30days from date of hire. * Must have valid GMDSS operator endorsement. * Must be able to direct, fairly evaluate, and correct performance of subordinates. * Must have valid states driver's license. * Valid radio operator's license. * Must be able to understand and use information in cargo information cards and material safety data sheets. * Must be able to work independently and without direct supervision. REGIONAL SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS * Valid Coast Guard license, minimum Master 200 GT near Coastal, with a radar observer endorsement. * Valid Master of Towing near Coastal endorsement. * Five (5) years of experience towing barges as Master, Coastwise on the US East Coast, Gulf of Mexico. Job Condition and Environment * Ability to get along with crew members in confined quarters for prolonged periods of time * Must be able to perform the functions set forth in the attached job analysis and physically fit enough to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, climb onto barges and up and down ladders, and bending and twisting during boat/barge tie up. * Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.) * Must not be afraid of heights. Expected Hours of Work * Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours * Willing to take call outs. * Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night. McAllister Towing of NY is seeking highly qualified Captains. Duties and Responsibilities are outlined below. Captain: Reports to: The Captain reports to the General Manager or his/her designated representative. Supervises: The Captain is required to supervise all crewmembers of the vessel to which he/she is assigned. Description of Duties: Master of a tug or towing vessel. Vessel Security Officer (VSO) in charge of implementing and maintaining the AWO Alternative Security Program. Responsible to safely and efficiently operate and manage (performance of crew, vessel, and tow). Serve as Officer in Charge of the Navigation Watch. Assess and maintain vessel seaworthiness. Ensure the availability and serviceability of required lifesaving equipment. Verify the serviceability of all installed fire detection and firefighting systems and equipment. Require accommodations to be maintained in safe, clean condition at all times. Provide clear direction to subordinates. Prepare periodic performance evaluations for subordinates. Maintain vessel and crew readiness for emergency responses. Conduct and report the results of periodic vessel audits and inspections. Operate and maintain the assigned vessel in accordance with the quality, safety, security and environmental protection policies and procedures in the Vessel Operations Manual. Organize and conduct required training, drills and exercises. Complete, submit and maintain required records, logs and reports. Ensure adequate vessel manning and watches. Project a positive company image and maintain professional, amicable relationships with customers, pilots, terminal personnel and the public at all times. Other duties as may be assigned by the General Manager or his/her designated representative. Minimum Requirements: Valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Credential Valid 200 Ton License as Master Master of Towing STCW Certification Valid Radar Endorsement First Aid/CPR Fire Fighting Training Valid TWIC card NY Harbor Experience Z drive/Twin Screw Tugboat Experience Must pass pre-employment drug test Must pass pre-employment physical Preferred Requirements: 1,600 Gross Tons Towing/Oceans Physical Requirements: The unpredictable, ever-changing and inherently dangerous nature of tug and towing operations require the Captain to be physically qualified to ensure his/her own safety, as well as that of the vessel and crew. Specific physical requirements include: Adequate vision (i.e., absent any color blindness or impairment that cannot be corrected with prescription lenses). Adequate hearing. Capable of walking and standing on wet surfaces for extended periods of time. Able to handle heavy lines and operate heavy machinery. Ability to climb a 12-foot ladder without assistance. Ability to hoist oneself up and over a 12-inch wide, 6-foot-high barrier. Sufficient strength to: Lift 100 lbs. from deck to waist level. Lift 50 lbs. from deck to shoulder level. Lift 35 lbs. from deck to overhead; and Pull (drag) 120 lbs. at least 20 feet. Qualifications * Five (5) years at sea as Master on tugboats, tankers or oil barges or equivalent military experience * Four year college education in Maritime or related studies or equivalent experience preferred. * Valid US Coast Guard Master's license on offshore towboats 200T Minimum/Master of Towing Endorsement required. * ATB Operational experience strongly preferred. * 500T Minimum Master of Towing preferred. * Extensive knowledge of the tugboat and oil transportation industry. * Must be thoroughly familiar with tank barge, ship and terminal/refinery operations. * Knowledge of tug and barge maintenance systems and equipment. * Complete a 24 hour HAZWOPER (including Incident Command System) training within 6 months of being hired. * First Aid/CPR training. * STCW Certification. * Valid State Driver's license. * Ability to get along with office staff and vessel crew members. * Maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive communications. * Able and willing to travel to the out ports. * Ability to work with others using courtesy, tact, and good judgment. * Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions. * Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance. * Computer Skills: Word, Excel and Outlook.
