Harrisburg School District company history timeline

1926

1926: John Harris and William Penn high schools open.

1945

Consolidation in the Harrisburg School District began in 1945 with Greenfield District followed by Bethel, Whitehall, Wyley Crossing, Bolivar, Burrow, Pleasant View and Valley View.

1971

1971: The board combines William Penn and John Harris high schools into one high school, called Harrisburg High School.

1989

The dropout rate is 7.2%. 1989: Parents of elementary-age students give the Harrisburg School District good marks in a survey.

1990

1990: The school board entertains a proposal to create a magnet school for kindergarten through 6th grade.

1991

1991: The Harrisburg schools dropout rate is 7.36 percent.

1995

1995: E.I. Associates releases architectural study of the district's 15 buildings.

1997

1997: After a fight in January at William Penn, the school board approves hiring at least four city police officers to patrol William Penn and John Harris.

2000

The student failure rate dipped below 50% this year for the first time since 2000 when the district was seized under the Empowerment Act.

2003

2003: The state grants $12 million for the Harrisburg Polytechnic Institute which will include a science and technology prep high school.

2004

PSSA test scores drop from 2004.

2007

2007: Piccola accuses Kohn of "rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic" in coming up with an alternative ranking system showing the Harrisburg School District was Pennsylvania's 25th most improved.
