Harrold Ford company history timeline

1970

Harold Eugene Ford, Jr. was born in Memphis, Tennessee on May 11, 1970.

The first foray into politics for Ford took place in 1970 when he was elected into the Tennessee House of Representatives, one of the youngest members of the state assembly and one of its few African-Americans.

1974

Among the most prominent was Harold Ford Sr., who used his charisma, campaign skills and funeral home connections to win a congressional seat in 1974 representing Memphis.

1996

Vows, Backs Dad's Urban Agenda But Plans Education Push," 7 November 1996, The Commercial Appeal: 7B.

After his father announced his retirement from the House in 1996, Ford ran to succeed him in the district encompassing the bulk of Memphis, Tennessee.

The same year that the elder Ford announced that he would not seek a twelfth term in office, Harold Ford Jr. completed the requirements for his law degree and graduated from the University of Michigan School of Law in 1996.

1997

Harold E. Ford Jr. was sworn into the United States House of Representatives on January 7, 1997, and became a member of the 105th Congress.

2000

The keynote speaker at the 2000 Democratic National Convention, Ford was one of the party's candidates seeking the Senate seat of retiring majority leader Bill Frist of Tennessee.

2002

19Marc Sandalow, "Savvy, Cash Clinched Job for Pelosi; Tightly Orchestrated Campaign Followed Lucrative Fund Raising," 17 November 2002, San Francisco Chronicle: A3.

After the 2002 mid term elections resulted in Democrats losing Congressional seats, Ford announced his desire to be House Minority Whip based on Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi’s charge that the democratic leadership was less than competent.

2005

In April 2005, Ford announced his intentions to run for the Senate seat occupied by Senate Majority Leader William H. "Bill" Frist.

In 2005, Ford Jr. had been re-elected to Congress several times and sought to become the first African-American elected to the United States Senate from the South since Reconstruction.

2006

In October 2006, as polls indicated that Ford maintained a slight lead in the Tennessee Senate race against Bob Corker, the National Republican Party ran a controversial television advertisement featuring a blonde woman who claimed to have met Ford, who is single, at a Playboy Club Party.

Bucking tradition, Ford did not seek reelection to his House seat in 2006 and instead unsuccessfully sought the Senate seat that was being vacated by the retiring senator Bill Frist.

Moreover, he was one of the few Democrats who voted in support of the 2006 Bankruptcy Bill.

2007

In 2007, for instance, John Ford, a former state senator and an uncle of Harold Ford Jr., was sentenced to 5 ½ years in prison in a corruption case.
