1925 Atlanta Mayor Walter Sims decides to develop an auto racetrack into an airfield, with part of it renamed Candler Field after Coca-Cola magnate Asa Candler.
The first flight to land at Candler Field was a mail plane from Florida Airways flying from Jacksonville, Florida in 1926 and the first flight to depart from the field was witnessed by 15,000 people also in 1926 when Florida Airways Flight leftto Jacksonville and Miami.
Hartsfield later was quoted as saying that he clearly remembered the City officially changing the name in 1929.
Atlanta airport was the busiest airport in the United Statesin 1957, and also the busiestin the world between noon and 2:00 PM each day.
In 1971, the city renamed the airport after Mayor William B. Hartsfield, who steered the airport from the barnstorming era to the jet age.
The first rapid-transit commuter rail opened in 1979, and by the early 21st century the system had expanded to include several more lines.
1984 Fourth runway opens.
1993 ValuJet, predecessor to AirTran Airways, launches as a discount carrier.
International Concourse “E” opened in 1994.
1996 The main terminal atrium opens in time for Atlanta to refresh the airport’s look as the city hosts the Summer Olympics.
Additionally, a record 6 million international passengers travel through Hartsfield-Jackson, marking a 103 percent growth since the city of Atlanta hosted the 1996 Olympic Summer Games
A record 83.6 million passengers passed through the Airport, and since 1998, Hartsfield-Jackson has retained its title as the world’s busiest passenger airport.
Hartsfield is recognized as the World’s Busiest Airport in terms of both passenger traffic and landings and takeoffs after accommodating more than 78 million passengers and more than 900,000 landings and takeoffs for 1999.
The Department of Aviation begins developing its new Master Plan — Hartsfield – 2000 and Beyond.
2006 The fifth runway opens.
2008 Delta acquires Northwest Airlines, becoming for a couple of years the world’s largest airline.
Hartsfield-Jackson Concessions program wins the Atlanta Business Chronicle Best in Real Estate: 2008 Deal of the Year award in the Retail category.
2009 Opening of the rental car center and SkyTrain people-mover to the Georgia International Convention Center and the rental car center.
The Airport’s Concessions unit wins the Airports Council International–North America’s Best Convenience Retail Program award in the large airport category and the 2009 Concessions Person of the Year (director of Concessions).
2011 Southwest acquires AirTran Airways.
May 16, 2012 Hartsfield-Jackson opens its new international terminal and Concourse F, introducing a second, eastside entrance to the airport off I-75.
In 2015, the airport served a record one-hundred million passengers and is the World’s Busiest Airport by passenger count.
