He helped plan the undergraduate college of science and engineering chartered in 1955, but he did not live to see it opened.
Harvey Mudd was founded in 1955.
In 1956, Doctor Platt was appointed the founding president of Harvey Mudd College, the fifth college established as part of the Claremont Colleges Group Plan, and designed as a small residential college of physical science and engineering.
Two years later, in 1957, when the Space Race made technical education a priority in the United States, the College opened its doors.
Two years later, in 1957, the college started with 48 students and seven faculty members.
Classes began in 1957, with a founding class of 48 students and one building–Mildred E. Mudd Hall, a dormitory.
In June 1959, the College held its first commencement ceremony graduating Stuart Black and Peter Loeb, who both transferred to Harvey Mudd their junior years.
In 1963, the College initiated the nationally recognized Clinic Program, which allows student teams to solve problems posed by sponsoring industry, government and nonprofit organizations.
Doctor Focke joined the faculty of Harvey Mudd College as Professor of Physics where he remained until his retirement in 1971.
Under the presidency of Maria Klawe, begun in 2006, Harvey Mudd became a leading advocate for women in STEM in higher education.
Harvey Mudd celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2015, with student enrollment at 812 and climbing.
