Haskell Indian Nations University company history timeline

1884

Founded in 1884, Haskell Indian Nations University is a staple in the Lawrence community.

Twenty-two American Indian children entered the doors of a new school in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1884 to begin an educational program that focused on agricultural education in grades one through five.

When Haskell opened in 1884, it was called United States Indian Industrial Training School.

1887

In 1887, the school was renamed as Haskell Institute in honor of Dudley Haskell, the United States representative from Kansas's 2nd district who had gained getting the school built in Lawrence.

1894

By 1894, training expanded beyond the elementary level, and new studies were offered to include a commercial department.

1895

The commercial department (the predecessor of the business department) opened in 1895 with five typewriters.

1926

The stadium arch was built in 1926 in memory of the Native Americans who lost their lives fighting in World War I.

1927

By 1927, high school classes were accredited by the state of Kansas, and Haskell began offering post high school courses in a variety of areas.

1930

And even after the 1930’s, when the emphasis on football began to decrease, athletics remained a high priority to Haskell students and alumni.

1933

The auditorium was constructed in 1933 and currently houses works by Franklin Gritts, a university alumni.

1965

In 1965, Haskell graduated its last high school class.

1967

Two years later, with more curriculum development, the school in 1967 was renamed as Haskell Indian Junior College, able to award associate degrees and certificates in special skills programs.

1970

In 1970, Haskell began offering junior college classes and changed its name to Haskell Indian Nations University to reflect this shift of focus to higher education.

1993

With the vision to continue academic progression and plans for the 21st century, Haskell Indian Junior College became Haskell Indian Nations University in 1993.

In 1993, the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs, Ada Deer, approved that development, which had been built on expansion of the curricula and programs.
