Hattiesburg Public School District company history timeline

1892

In 1892, Reverend M.J. Currie, who was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, was elected superintendent of the city schools.

1907

Camp Elementary School (formerly Hardy Street School) Built in 1907.

1918

His ability as a schoolman had been proved; his love for the schoolwork was established when in 1918 he accepted the presidency of Chickasaw College at Pontotoc, Mississippi.

Named for W. H. Jones who was a teacher in Hattiesburg schools and principal of Sixth Street School (replaced by Eureka School) beginning in 1918 and for a number of years there after.

1942

She was a special advisor to President Roosevelt on minority affairs and assistant to the Secretary of War for selection of the first officer candidates in the School for WACs in 1942.

1950

Mary Bethune Elementary School, now known as Lillie Burney Learning Academy, was built in 1950.
