Hotel ConstructionConstruction of the Hawthorne began with an expected completion date of August 1925.
The hotel is a six-story Colonial Revival-style building that was first constructed in 1925 and originally featured 150 rooms but has since been remodeled and now has a total of 89 rooms.
1952: With increasing numbers of guests bringing their own automobiles, the business opted to change its name to the “Hawthorne Motor Hotel.” It also temporarily covered its Palladian windows in the ballroom, replaced the second-floor balcony with meeting space, and enlarged many of the guestrooms.
The hotel later donated it to the Essex Institute in 1959.
In 1970, Elizabeth Montgomery, her real-life husband Bill Asher, and the rest of the cast and crew stayed at the Hawthorne Hotel while filming episodes for the program.

1985: The business celebrated its 60th anniversary—a milestone that few other hotels in America could claim.
A member of Historic Hotels of America since 1991, the Hotel Hawthorne has been one of the most cherished landmarks in Salem, Massachusetts, for a century.
1991: The Hawthorne Hotel was inducted into Historic Hotels of America, becoming one of its first members.
2001: Former United States President Bill Clinton visited the Hawthorne Hotel, having arrived shortly after the end of his second term.
2003: The Hawthorne Hotel acquired the neighboring Suzannah Flint Guest House to help accommodate its guests.
