Hayward Unified School District company history timeline

1934

Beginning in 1934, the Adult School was called the Hayward Union Evening School and held classes in the evenings at the old Hayward High School building on Foothill Blvd.

1948

In about 1953, appraisals of the homes on the site of the school were done and the property was taken by HUHSD using eminent domain. It started in 1948 when Hayward Union High trustees authorized school officials to begin negotiating for the approximately 30 acre site where Castro Valley High stands today.

1950

Ground-breaking ceremonies for the first San Lorenzo High School were held on January 24, 1950 by the Hayward Union High School District Trustees.

1953

Freshmen and sophomores moved into the $2,500,000 campus, and the first graduating class was in 1953.

In about 1953, appraisals of the homes on the site of the school were done and the property was taken by HUHSD using eminent domain.

1954

In September 1954 more than twenty homes were sold at auction and hauled away by new owners.

1956

1957

High School school opened in September, 1957.

The image was featured in the 1957 Castro Valley High School Yearbook.

1960

Many teachers who had worked there in the 60’s, 70’s, and early 80’s under its previous name, such as Glen Arney and Dave Cobble, returned after spending those 3 years at an elementary school. It was used as a parent co-op for small children by the San Lorenzo School District until demolished in the early 1960's.

1963

San Lorenzo High was part of Hayward Union School District from 1950 – 1963. It joined the San Lorenzo School District in 1963 while Paul Ehret was the Superintendent.

1964

The San Lorenzo Unified School District built Marina High School in 1964.

1983

After 25 years, Calaroga school was closed in 1983 because the District made a decision to close all of the junior high schools.

1986

In August of 1986, after having been closed for 3 years by the District, the old Calaroga Jr.
