The Team
Upstart's Machine Learning, Personal Loan Underwriting team is focused on leveraging machine learning to power Upstart's underwriting models. This team builds the underwriting model which determines credit decisioning at Upstart and plays a central role in overall performance with numerous challenging problems to solve.
As a Machine Learning Engineer, PL UW at Upstart, you will collaborate with Research Scientists, Data Scientists, and other engineering departments. Your work will impact the team in a number of ways:
Increase ML productivity through better software and infrastructure; improve how we research, train, deploy, serve and monitor our models.
Reduce the time from idea to production and enable testing of new ideas to fulfill our mission of enabling access to credit more effectively.
Design and implement code and algorithms to improve our model's predictive power.
How you'll make an impact
Build repeatable workflows and automation that allow scientists to focus on high-leverage tasks (methodology, writing, analysis) and reduce time spent on maintenance.
Discover and develop a short and long-term roadmap of engineering improvements for the PL UW team.
Explore new algorithms and methodologies for our machine learning models.

Compensation
At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. A Day in the Life:
No two days are ever the same in this role.
Tasks can include:
Training operators in proper process, tool usage, and tool maintenance.
Collaborating with other engineering teams on process efficiency, quality, and safety improvement projects.
Developing new designs using 3D modeling software like Solidworks for carts or production tools. Then work with the fab shops to complete the fabrication of them in a timely manner.
Work closely with contractors to coordinate utility needs such as air and electrical drops, and oversee the installation of new equipment.
Coordinate daily, weekly, and monthly preventative maintenance tasks on machinery.
Troubleshoot machines whenever the team needs extra support.

Primary Function
Primary Function :
The Industrial/Manufacturing Engineer will own the planning and coordination of assembly manufacturing processes and procedures to implement the best methods of work. The incumbent will interface with other engineers and functions to constantly evaluate the production and manufacturing process to identify areas for improvement.
Responsibilities
* Ensure all processes and equipment within scope of responsibility operates safely and to OSHA standards.
* Setup and maintain accurate labor routings.
* Develop efficient processes to support cost savings targets for operations.
* Reviews module assembly drawings & CAD Models for manufacturability (both internally and with the Customer) as required and/or requested
* Determines cost and timing impacts for engineering changes that affect the assembly process, square footage requirements, capital investments (equipment, packaging and facilities) and direct labor.
* Drives lean concepts (5S, Kanban, Visual Factory, TPM etc.) throughout the organization.
* Implements process improvements to improve overall efficiencies, including automation.
* Setup and troubleshooting of plastic welding processes
* Provides guidance in equipment and capital selection to the Purchasing Dept.
* Provides industrial and mechanical engineering expertise to lead design and development of the assembly systems, production tooling and packaging.
* Develop and track capital investment budgets for assigned projects
* Tracks, manages and communicates the capital equipment timing plan and open issues to the program team
* Develops all RFQ's and Equipment Specifications for Capital and Tooling Requirements, including all contract services, prior to SOP
* Main interface with machining, automation and capital equipment vendors
* Responsible for all production processes development and final approvals including work cell layout, ergonomic workstation design, and line balancing.
* Responsible for development of Prototype and Production Process Documentation through SOP +90 days including: Process Flow, Cycle Time Analysis, PFMEA and Work Instructions
* Owns error & mistake proofing devices & processes
* Owns initial plant floor layout & PFEP, including material flow and storage
* Procures and installs all line side material presentation and handling devices
* Transfers all equipment and process documentation to the Production Plant prior to SOP including all OEM Equipment Documentation (electronic and hard copies of Manuals, BOM, Drawings, recommended spare parts and recommended PM's)
* Owns initial training coordination for new equipment or process changes.
* Other duties may be assigned as needed
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
* 1-3 years of related industry experience
* Experience with line balancing, time studies/labor routings, etc.
* Demonstrated skills in optimizing assembly
* Proven track record improving material flow
* Exposure to lean manufacturing concepts
* Strong skills in AutoCAD
* Knowledge of Industrial Safety Standards and requirements
* Experience setting up labor routings
* Ability to analyze current business labor efficiencies, capital investments and other historical data to calculate product cost

A Day in the Life:
No two days are ever the same in this role.
Tasks can include:
Training operators in proper process, tool usage, and tool maintenance.
Collaborating with other engineering teams on process efficiency, quality, and safety improvement projects.
Developing new designs using 3D modeling software like Solidworks for carts or production tools. Then work with the fab shops to complete the fabrication of them in a timely manner.

Reviews and interprets relevant codes, standards, drawings, specifications, technical manuals, peer-reviewed literature, data logs, and other documentation to evaluate the compliance of the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of the subject product, equipment, or system.
Conducts various analyses, including, but not limited to, industrial safety and accidents; equipment and machinery design and failure; product liability; and design and safety.
Provides support on fire and explosion investigations involving mechanical systems, products, and equipment.
Initiates, develops, and maintains mutually beneficial client relationships.
Required Education and Certifications
B.S. Mechanical Engineering degree or higher.
Ph.D. or Forensic experience with P.E. required.

Project management and/or field investigation experience is required.
