Pharmacist technician job at Health First
The UM Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the intake and review of prior authorization requests for medications requested under the medical benefit. The UM Pharmacy Technician makes approval decisions and denial recommendations based on predetermined clinical criteria. They establish rapport with Provider offices and leverages strong communication and customer service skills when providing updates and delivering decision notifications to members and providers, The UM Pharmacy Technician position is part of multidisciplinary team and works closely with Providers, Pharmacists, and Medical Directors.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Reviews prior authorization requests and units for medications requested under the medical benefit
Assesses provider-submitted clinical information for clinical appropriateness based on predetermined clinical criteria
Sends notification to members and providers of authorization decisions via telephone, fax, or mail
Ensures prior authorization reviews are conducted within timeframes set forth by CMS and/or NYSDOH
Establishes great rapport with Provider offices via telephonic communication
Sends request for information sheets to Providers
Ensures that patient information is shared appropriately maintaining confidentiality and compliance with federal law and HIPAA regulations
Additional duties as necessary
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution
Either nationally certified Pharmacy Technician in good standing (i.e., PTCB, NHA) or registered or licensed Pharmacy Technician in good standing
Experience conducting prior authorization reviews
Experience requiring written, verbal, and telephonic communication in English that is clear, concise, grammatically correct, and professional
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong written and verbal communication skills in Chinese, Spanish, or Russian
Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Team player with a passion for learning and interest in growing skills in a dynamic environment with various opportunities
Knowledge of specialty pharmaceuticals and billing practices in the medical benefit
Knowledge of regulations of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services including but not limited to National and Local
Coverage Determinations
PC Skills with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint (creating presentations and slides), and Excel (Pivot tables).
Experience with TruCare Care Management Platform

Greater New York City Area (NY, NJ, CT residents): $47,403 - $64,338
All Other Locations (within approved locations): $41,101 - $60,320

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Obtain home medication histories by interviewing the patient/family/significant other for patients arriving through the Emergency Department to be admitted to the inpatient units.
Utilize the external prescription history, patient's electronic medical record (EMR), and the patient's pharmacy to verify the correct medication history. This includes but is not limited to prescription, non prescription, herbals, and supplements.
Compile all of the information obtained to determine a complete medication history including the medication name, dose, frequency, and adherence.
Document the correct medication history in the EMR.
Positively interacts with patients, other hospital guests, and hospital staff to enhance the quality of service provided.
Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalent
CT Pharmacy Technician registration. CPhT is preferred but not required.
1 - 2 years of retail or medication reconciliation experience preferred
An appropriate level of understating and training in medical terminology and medication related terms. Current/fluent in pharmacy terminology, medications and dosages.
Proficient with using a computer, typing, and organization.
Required to concentrate for extended periods of time, provide high output of work on short notice, establish priorities, make quick accurate decisions.
Preferred Skills:
Be able to prioritize competing demands, work independently, and show flexibility and teamwork.
Must demonstrate excellent communication skills to patients and team members.

Responsibilities
1. Under the direction of the Clinical Nurse, engages in selected tasks and activities as directed to obtain and report information to assist the nurse in the assessment, planning and evaluation of patient needs, treatment and response to treatment.
1.1 Obtains and records vital signs as delegated by the RN
2. Under the direction of the Clinical Nurse, performs technical duties and selected treatments, procedures and activities which contribute to safe and efficient delivery of patient care.
2.1 Obtains a 12-lead ECG and continuous Lead II with correct patient information entered.
3. Effectively assists in the care of patients with consideration for the safety of key populations as appropriate.
3.1 Collaborates with members of the multidisciplinary team offering suggestions on addressing patient/family needs, taking into account cultural and/or individual diversity and demonstrates sensitivity to these aspects of care delivery.
4. Effectively and professionally communicates and interacts with patients, families, and staff.
4.1 Covers the Information Associate (IA ) desk in the absence of the IA under the direction of the PSM or designee.
5. Maintains clinical competency in areas of responsibility and participates in unit activities that promote a cohesive staff group.
5.1 Attends all mandatory continuing education classes.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
A minimum of a high school diploma or GED; and CNA or other educational equivalent, i.e. Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, Student Nurse who has completed one semester of clinical experience. Additional experience preferred will be specified depending on placement.
EXPERIENCE
Either (A) Two (2) years relevant direct patient care experience as dictated by placement. or (B) Education as stated above. All candidates must successfully complete the Patient Care Associate Competency Based Training and/or the unit based Emergency Department Technical Competency Based Training and Practicum.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patient, families, peers, and supervisor. Must display the ability to prioritize and adjust work plans based on the needs of the patient, the unit, and the patient care team. Must display the ability to accept direction and work as a member of a unified team. CPR Required.

Quality/No Harm:
* Fills physician orders, medication carts, or stock requisitions accurately.
* Prepares intravenous admixtures or other sterile products accurately.
* Replenishes medications in Pyxis units.
