1943 Bureau of Medical Services and Bureau of State Services established as headquarters components of United States Public Health Service in the Federal Security Agency.

1953

1953 United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare created at cabinet level, replacing Federal Security Agency.

1970

1970 National Health Service Corps launched.

New Bureau of Disease Prevention and Environmental Control (becomes Center for Disease Control in 1970) established.

1973

The Health Services Administration was established in 1973 along with the Health Resources Administration.

1979

1979 United States Department of Education Organization Act signed into law, establishing separate United States Department of Education.

1982

1982 Health Resources and Services Administration created by merging Health Services Administration and Health Resources Administration.

1984

1984 HIV identified as a virus that causes AIDS by Public Health Service and French scientists.

1985

1985 Blood test to detect HIV licensed.

1986

1986 Legislation authorizing the National Practitioner Data Bank and National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program passed.

1987

1987 Indian Health Service separates from HRSA and becomes an independent agency.

1987 Office of Rural Health Policy established to promote better health care service in rural America.

1990 Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resource Emergency (CARE) Act begins providing support for people with HIV/AIDS.

1991

1991 Healthy Start program established to attack the causes of infant mortality, low birthweight and other poor perinatal outcomes for women and infants living in high-risk situations.

1996

1996 Ryan White CARE Act Amendments of 1996 expand services to pregnant women with HIV to prevent transmission of the virus to their babies.

1997

1997 State Children's Health Insurance Program created, enabling States to extend health coverage to more uninsured children.

1998

1998 Health Professions Education Partnership Act of 1998 consolidates and reauthorizes health professions and minority and disadvantaged health education programs.

2002

2002 President's Health Center Initiative significantly expands program that makes primary health care available and accessible to underserved individuals.

2005

In 2005, HRSA-supported community health centers treated nearly a million patients between the ages of 65–84 and 90,000 patients age 85 and older.

2005 Office of Health Information Technology established to leverage the power of health information technology and telehealth to meet the needs of people who are uninsured, underserved, and/or have special needs.
