    Under general supervision of the Program Coordinator or Program Manager, the Peer Specialist will be a Certified Peer Specialist and this position is designated for a person who identifies as having a lived experience with mental health recovery and/or recovery from substance use, and is willing to use and share his or her personal, practical experience, knowledge, and first-hand insight to benefit the team and its clients. The Peer Support Specialist will engage individuals with psychiatric disabilities who may have had contact with the criminal justice system. The Peer Support Specialist will be expected to work one-on-one with referrals from mental health courts, probation, forensic liaison, and shelters to provide ongoing supports clients may need to avoid incarceration in the future. The Peer Support Specialist will be expected to engage clients prior to release from jail to develop reentry plans that ensure a smooth transition to back into the community. After release, the Peer Support Specialist will provide both personal encouragement and practical assistance. Under the supervisor of the Program Manager or Program Coordinator, the peer specialist engages in non-directive and supportive relationships that promote empowerment and self-learning; provides peer counseling and consultation to individual clients, families, and team members; acts as a liaison with community resources; carries out rehabilitation and support functions; and assists in substance abuse services, education, support and consultation to families, and crisis intervention under the clinical supervision of the Program Manager. Services are provided based on Recovery tenets and are aimed to promote self-determination and the overall health and well-being of persons served. Qualifications: The Peer Specialist must meets local standards for certification as a peer specialist in the State of Ohio.
