On Febrary 1, 2002, Dakota Heartland Hospital was acquired for $33 million by Meritcare (owned by Clarent Corp. of Houston).
In 2004, Heartland won federally-qualified health clinic, or FQHC, designation, allowing it to expand services.
By 2006, OSF Saint Francis Medical Center's Mother Frances Krasse Family Health Center along Garden Street and the Methodist's Carver Family Clinic, along John H. Gwynn Blvd., had both become Heartland sites on Peoria's South Side.
Heartland expanded again in 2007 when it built a clinic out of an old pharmacy in a shopping plaza along Wisconsin Avenue in the East Bluff.
In May of 2011, Heartland Health Resource Center was incorporated as a non-profit in the State of South Dakota and was given 501(c)3 status with the federal Department of Treasury.
Our integrated primary care and behavioral health partnership with Trilogy Behavioral Health Care is nationally recognized, winning the reintegration Award for Clinical Medicine from the National Council for Behavioral Health in 2012.
In September 2021 the American Medical Association recognized Heartland Health Centers with a Joy in Medicine Award for health care organizations that have committed to efforts that improve medical provider satisfaction and reduce burnout.
