We are currently looking for a Field Heavy Equipment Shop Mechanic to join our Heavy Civil team at our Dinwiddie, VA Field Service Center. The Mechanic position is subject to travel throughout VA to our various job sites to support our operations teams.

Basic Requirements:
Valid Driver's license

Test repaired equipment to insure operating efficiency.
Essential Functions:
Inspecting and lubricating heavy construction equipment in shop and at construction job sites.
Repair trouble shooting of heavy trucks and construction equipment (i.e., loaders, dozers, cranes, backhoes, etc.), including removal of defective parts and installing new or rebuilt parts.
Test repaired equipment to insure operating efficiency.

Make preventative maintenance checks and inspections
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds from ground level to waist level.
Continuous standing and walking required throughout a scheduled work shift.
Required to perform simple grasping and fine manipulation tasks with both hands, and requires acceptable corrected vision (in both eyes) and acceptable corrected hearing.
Must be able to climb ladders and/or steps on equipment to access areas to be repaired.
Must be able to bend, squat, kneel and crawl.
Must be able to work in dirty, greasy, noisy, cold, hot and humid working conditions.

Work Experience:

If not operating heavy equipment the candidate will be required to perform general labor work if needed.

* Conducts disking, chopping, mowing, rotovating, digging, loading and leveling to a rough grade for the purpose of ditch cleaning, culvert installation, creating and maintaining trails and fire breaks, patching potholes, and piling slash for various purposes.
* Performs minor repairs which include replacement of hoses, belts, fuses, light bulbs, etc. that do not require dismantling large components of the equipment such as radiators, hydraulic tanks, alternators, tracks, etc. Services equipment by checking fluids, lubricating, and performing safety checks.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Physical Effort: Very strenuous effort is required in the operation and frequent adjustment of large pieces of equipment and attachments, often under adverse operating conditions. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jolting received from operation of the equipment over rough surfaces. Location of the controls and attachments frequently requires work in awkward or strained positions. Daily equipment servicing requires bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting of heavy objects. The employee frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance. The employee uses jacks, pulleys, dollies, or other lifting and carrying devices. Work may be from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, or high places, and in hard-to-reach places. Frequent arm and leg movements are required to operate controls, make repairs, and build items.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in all types of weather often in an open driver's seat. Due to operations of large and complicated equipment, often in rough terrain, the operator is exposed to injury resulting from equipment overturning, and is subject to noise, vibration, dust, and fumes from machinery. Caution must be exercised to avoid injury from moving machinery and breaking cables, and other difficult circumstances.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Willing and able to perform manual labor, including but not limited to shoveling curb, removing inlet protection, assisting pulling string line & checking grade, and spotting for trucks/equipment.
Work alongside the motor grader utilizing equipment such as a wheel loader or skid steer to pickup and move bulk material.
Run all necessary equipment to support the motor grader. This will include smooth drum roller, backhoe, trench roller, and mini excavator.
Utilize Southern Utilities & Grading's core values in daily duties.
Communicate professionally with everyone on site, including but not limited to supervisors, teammates, contractors, clients and vendor partners.
Understand, interpret and follow goals and directions from a foreman or superintendent.
Maintain attendance at work, including presence at work during regular work hours or other schedule as may be assigned by the foreman or superintendent. Acceptance of overtime assignments also may be required in order to operational needs.

Responsibilities

Licenses & Certifications
Required: Valid Drivers License, OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour certification.
