Load and move dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials, using trucks, power cranes, shovels, or related equipment. 2.) Start machine, engage clutch, and push and move levers, switches, and pedals to guide machine along forms or guidelines and to control the operation of machine attachments, such as blades, buckets, scrapers, or swing booms. 3.) Drive and maneuver equipment equipped with blades in successive passes over working areas to remove topsoil, vegetation, or rocks or to distribute and level earth or terrain. 4.) Operate machines to spread, smooth, level, or steel-reinforce stone, concrete, or asphalt on road beds or other job sites as needed. 5.) Operate tamping machines or manually roll surfaces to compact earth fills, foundation forms, and finished road materials, according to grade specifications. 6.) Observe grade in order to adjust machine settings and indicate low spots for workers to add material. 7.) Conduct documented pre-shift inspections of equipment for safety and mechanical defects. 8.) Work long, flexible hours as demanded by our customers including nights, weekends, and work outside for extended periods during all seasons of the year. 10.) Align machines, cutter heads, or depth gauge makers with reference stakes and guidelines or ground or position equipment, following hand signals of other workers. 11.) Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members. 12.) Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair equipment, using mechanics' hand tools. Conduct pre-shift inspections and report any concerns or malfunctions to supervisors. 13.) Learn and follow safety regulations. 14.) Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects. 15.) Perform necessary work while complying with all company policies and procedures. 16.) Perform additional duties as required or directed by their immediate supervisor or other manager. 17.) Must have regular and predictable attendance. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education: * High school diploma or GED * Must be a minimum of 18 years old. Work Experience: * Must be able to operate multiple pieces of equipment. * Must be willing to use hand tools while not operating equipment. * Minimum of 3 years' operating and utility work experience. * Must have a good work ethic and work as a team player; including operating different types of equipment and general labor work if needed. SPECAL QUALIFICATIONS: Experience pulling trench boxes and sloping excavations. Heavy Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort required including pulling and lifting or moving heavy weight material with frequent lifting or moving materials or equipment (over 80 pounds). If a position specific Physical Demands sheet is attached, it will describe in more detail the physical demands that are required. Physical Activity: Position requires the ability to continuously work around any or all of the following: noise, dust, heat, cold, oil and heavy equipment. Personal protective equipment is normally required of the position. Staff assigned to this role will provide functions critical to completion of the following tasks: * Daily vehicle and equipment inspections * Act as a lead worker, overseeing all aspects of job completion to include managing subordinate staff on jobsites * Jobsite planning, setup, and teardown * Safety tailgate briefings prior to assigned work * Haul heavy equipment to and from job sites * Maintain and operate a wide range of heavy equipment including various excavators, backhoes, track hoes, track dump trucks, skid steers, etc. * Oversee completion of truck/supply room inventory * Oversee crew completion of all other work-related tasks The benefits of being a City of Raleigh Senior Heavy Equipment Operator: * Get your CDL! This position carries with it an on-call requirement including weekends and/or holidays, which includes 8 hours of paid standby per on-call week, plus the potential to earn overtime pay at 1.5 times the normal hourly rate for hours worked over 40. Work Location: This position will report to the Lake Woodard Operations Center, located at 3324 Lake Woodard Dr, Raleigh, NC 27604. The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. * Performs skilled maintenance work with the proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks, following established safety policies, procedures, applicable codes, and regulations * Serves as a lead worker of a two staff member crew by assigning work and monitoring work completion * Operates and/or transports equipment; operates assigned heavy equipment for various functions which may include grading/excavating, collection and removal of debris, refuse and/or snow, and/or material application and distribution. * Plans routes and sets up work areas for safety and operational efficiency, including overseeing setup/teardown of traffic control measures, work zones, and various safety equipment including trench boxes, hydraulic shoring, and confined space equipment. Monitors work to ensure applicable rules and regulations are followed * Utilizes heavy equipment to cut and remove vegetation from areas where sanitary sewer structures are located outside of public right of ways or streets. Examples of work areas include rough terrain, steep grades, stream beds, and low-lying wetland areas * Plans, monitors and reviews inventory, resources and materials needs. Initiates orders for resources based on requirements, working with contract workers and trade specialists as needed to schedule and coordinate repairs and maintenance services * Instructs staff completing various manual labor tasks such as work site cleanup, materials hauling/disposal, use of various gas-powered small equipment, and additional site restoration activities * Documents work progress and completes electronic work orders * Responds to customer generated calls and investigates reports of issues to determine appropriate corrective actions * Supports the City's emergency response in the event of inclement weather, such as debris cleanup after severe storms or snow and ice response for Division facilities * Fills in, as needed, for the assigned Senior Utilities Specialist (Field Supervisor) during absences or vacancies Education and Experience: High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and 3 to 5 years' experience in medium to heavy construction equipment operation or related work, such as: * Construction: grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction * Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation * Mechanics: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems * Farming: manual labor, equipment operating * Moving Company: labor, truck driver * General Municipal Worker: utility inspector * Tech School Student: mechanical * Firefighter: full or part-time OR Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.
