An Apprentice Operator must meet the minimum requirements of a Journey Operator within two years of employment. These positions are considered essential employees, filling a snow and ice removal position during inclement winter weather. When a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of Commissioners, all Larimer County employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker.
The typical schedule for this position is 7am-3:30pm Monday to Friday in the Winter and 7am-5:30pm Monday to Thursday in the Summer, with a 24 hour/365 day nonrestrictive call back.

Responsibilities
Major Job Activities:
+ Provides OSP services requiring trenching, loaders, dump trucks, etc.
+ Performs tasks involving physical labor at installation sites to aid daily operations.
+ Performs site preparation and implementation activities required to implement approved OSP solution.
+ Operates hand and power tools of all types, including air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments.
+ Prepares sites; digs trenches; sets braces to support the sides of excavations; erects scaffolding; and cleans up rubble, debris, and other waste materials.
+ Assists in restoration activities to return site to previous condition before project work.

Job Summary:
The Equipment Operator will operate heavy machinery (boring machines) for construction or excavation projects in a safe manner, avoiding utilities and other obstacles.
Job Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
Operate heavy equipment in compliance with the company's operating safety policies and procedures.
Load and unload equipment from vehicles and trailers.
Responsible for regular maintenance and care of the assigned heavy equipment, produce any documentation needed for each job, daily communication with managers is a must.
Loads and hauls the machine.
Drives, sets up, and breaks down safely and efficiently.
Operates heavy equipment near active utilities.
Have knowledge of shoring systems and how to use them
Rigging and setting of structures
Along with operating must be willing to assist in other activities such as but not limited to
Placement of conduit in open trenches
Proofing conduits
Potholing existing utilities
Forming and pouring of concrete
Placement of asphalt
Avoids any marked utilities and implements all precautions to prevent utility strikes.
Communicates with supervisors for job details.
Before the equipment is utilized, walks path to ensure all utilities have been located and develops a plan for going above or below each utility or obstacle in the path.
Inspects and maintains job equipment.
Adheres to all company policies, procedures, standards, and safety rules.
May be required to work additional hours and/or weekends, as needed, to meet deadlines.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum 1-year prior experience using the locating equipment to find any underground utilities.
Must have experience operating heavy equipment near active utilities.
Must be familiar with locate systems.
Ability to operate an asphalt roller, skid steer, backhoe, mini excavator, vacuum truck, bore machine, and other heavy equipment.
Must have a valid driver's license.
Possession of a commercial driver's license (CDL) with tanker endorsement or a willingness to obtain the license.
DOT Medical Card.
Experience with Ditch Witch and Vermeer is preferred.
Must be able to operate the equipment safely.
Read and understand plans and specifications.
Must follow all OSHA, ANSI standards, as well as company rules & regulations.
Knowledge of basic computer skills.
Experience and knowledge of basic shoring methods
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Must be able and willing to work outdoors, subject to inclement weather conditions
Must be able to maintain visual and audible contact with other crewman and all moving or stationary persons/vehicles/objects to ensure safe coordination of movement
Must be able to work around heavy equipment and machinery
Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time
Must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 50 pounds
Routinely requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, and twisting

PLEASE NOTE: This is a seasonal position for the month of January 2025. Opportunities to begin work as early as November 2024 may be available based on need and candidate availability. Individuals in this role will be required to work every day January 5th-January 26th, up to 12 hours per day. Additional work may be available the week following Stock Show, January 27th-January 31st.

Overview As an Equipment Operator, you will play a vital role in supporting our event operations by operating a range of machinery, including forklifts, skid steers, tractors, loaders, and dump trucks. This role involves assisting with event setup and breakdown, unloading deliveries, transporting shavings and manure waste, and clearing snow as needed. You'll be responsible for ensuring safe equipment operation and adhering to all NWSS policies and OSHA regulations.
The ideal candidate is a skilled, safety-conscious equipment operator with experience handling various types of machinery. Comfortable working in outdoor, livestock-centered environments, you demonstrate a strong commitment to efficiency and safety. Reliable, adaptable, and organized, you're ready to take on tasks that support the smooth operation of our event.
Reports to: Outside Grounds Supervisor
Duties & Responsibilities
Operate forklifts, skid steers, tractors, loaders, and dump trucks to complete tasks associated with event operations.
Assist with show move-in and move-out processes, ensuring efficient and timely setup and breakdown.
Unload deliveries, transport shavings and manure waster, and clear snow as needed, maintaining safe and organized work areas.
Conduct routine checks on equipment to ensure safety, report any maintenance needs, and follow all company policies and OSHA safety regulations.
Work primarily outdoors and around livestock, adapting to various weather conditions and event demands.
Perform lifting, bending, standing, and walking as needed throughout the workday to accomplish tasks.

Working Conditions
The National Western Complex is a multi-purpose indoor and outdoor commercial and agricultural complex where dusty conditions and animals may exist. While performing the duties of this job, work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, wind, and rain, on varied surfaces. Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-energy environment with large crowds.
Compensation & Benefits
This is a seasonal, hourly position with a pay rate of $20.50/hour for non-CDL positions and $21.50/hour for CDL positions.
Paid sick time offered at the rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.
