GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB Drives and operates heavy-duty trucks and equipment in the loading, hauling and distribution of materials, the transportation of equipment and the construction and maintenance of infrastructure. EXAMPLES OF WORK • Supervises the operations of work crews in the absence of an on-site foreman or first line supervisor or as directed. • Operates heavy trucks and equipment, to include dump trucks, flatbeds, loaders, backhoes, compactors, graders, dozers, trenchers, lowboys, cranes, vacuum trucks, and pans. • Transports equipment to work sites. • Inspects trucks, tools and equipment; performs maintenance on trucks, tools and equipment, ensuring that that trucks, tools and equipment are maintained and in proper working condition. • Performs physical labor in the maintenance, restoration or construction of roadways, utilities, drainage systems or disposal sites; works on special projects, drainage projects and erosion control. • Operates hand-held and gas-powered tools and equipment (i.e., pipe saws, air compressors, level instruments, pipe threaders, jack hammers, chain saws, shovels, rakes). • Prepares sites for work to include sweeping streets, shoveling and raking asphalt, stringing lines on roads, etc. • Assists with traffic control, to include setting up signs and barricades on roadways. • Performs related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the operation of heavy and complex trucks and equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Experience in a lead/supervisory capacity and knowledge of road maintenance and construction techniques preferred. Licenses and/or Certifications Required: Requires a valid class “A” commercial driver license (“CDL”) with no “O” (tractor/trailer) or “4” (manual transmission) restrictions. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate heavy and complex trucks and equipment requiring manipulation of multiple controls, where excellent eye/hand/foot coordination is essential for safe and productive operations. Required to perform heavy strenuous labor incidental to the operation of the vehicle. May serve as crew leader over lower-level personnel when assigned. As assigned to yard-trash duty, required to gather and manually load refuse, yard trash, brush, or bulk waste into truck. Work is performed independently in accordance with established procedures, routes, and schedules. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Operates a heavy duty, highly technical, and specially designed, one-person automated residential or commercial refuse collection truck equipped with an hydraulically operated container loading and waste packing mechanism in order to remove solid waste on an assigned collection route. Required to manually load yard trash, brush, or bulk waste when assigned to yard-trash duty. Operates a heavy duty residential rear-loading, semi-automated refuse collection truck equipped with an hydraulically operated container leading and waste packing mechanism in order to remove solid waste on an assigned collection route, while acting as crew leader for the two/three person assigned crew. Manually picks up cans for disabled variance customers. Transports waste collected to the waste disposal facility and properly disposes of the load. Climbs in and out of trucks and heavy equipment throughout the work day. Climbs stairs and ladders. Assures that the assigned collection vehicle is properly equipped, cleaned, and services; completes daily activity and equipment repair request reports as necessary. Checks the vehicle's fuel, oil, and coolant levels daily and fills as required. Operated assigned radio communication equipment as provided in the vehicle. Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip safety inspection of assigned vehicle. Assists in training other employees in the safe and efficient operation of vehicles and equipment and in learning various residential and commercial collection routes. Reports customer violations of refuse collection regulations to supervisor and makes special service runs as required to attend to and resolve customer complaints. Delivers dumpsters and roll-off containers to customer locations and makes customer contact. May act as a lead worker or crew leader over lower-level personnel on a regular basis or on specific projects. Operates other related sanitation equipment as required. Job Duties include cleaning and preparing a job site, loading and delivering materials, and using a variety of tools and machines such as blowtorches, forklifts, levels, lifts, power drills, grinders, saws, pressure washers, and water spraying equipment. Most important part of the job is watch take up (making sure no damage material gets put on a wire reel without being recorded) and feeding compound (if the compound that is being fed into the machine runs out, the entire processing line will shut down). Additionally, laborers and helpers work on almost all construction sites, performing a wide range of tasks varying in complexity from very easy to extremely difficult and hazardous. Although many of the tasks they perform require some training and experience, most tasks can be learned quickly. Individuals will be required to exhibit high aptitudes in a manufacturing environment and following instructions while maintaining a SAFETY-FIRST attitude. You'll need to be able to lift a decent amount of weight, up to 25 pounds, and occasionally 50 pounds.
