Supervision Received Lead Man, Crew Chief and/or Superintendent Exercised May assign work in absence of Lead Man, Crew Chief or Foreman Essential Job Functions * Operates a variety of motorized maintenance and construction equipment as assigned (e.g., front-end loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, snowplows, tractors, etc.) to assist with construction, repair and/or maintenance projects in the Highway, Water/Sewer, or Parks divisions of the Department. * Operates mechanical and other non-grade-determining equipment (e.g. air compressors, power saws, paint machine, concrete mixer, leaf blower, lawn mower, weed wacker, leaf vacuum, welder, jack hammers, etc.) related to assigned maintenance, construction and repair projects. * Participates in snow and ice removal and treatment operations, sometimes after normal work hours; participates in other inclement weather operations and services; assists in coordination and monitoring of contractual snow removal crews. * Maintains and cares for all equipment, machinery and vehicles used during work assignments; regularly performs preventative maintenance tasks; reports required maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles to Road Machinery personnel. * Provides effective and efficient customer service and promotes and maintains responsive community relations. * Follows safe work practices. The ideal candidate will be technically skilled and detail oriented with a focus on safety in carrying out manual work in the operation of heavy motor equipment related to fields and grounds projects. The position works under the general direction of the Fields and Grounds Foreman and/or Senior Working Foreman. Responsibilities and duties include: * Maintain all athletic fields in town by performing cleanups, mowing, grooming and lining clay infields; irrigation repairs; servicing trash barrels; turf maintenance practices and repairs; and other field-related work. * Assist team members in turf maintenance practices, such as aerating, sod cutting/replacement, seeding, weeding infield skins and clay infield installation and removal. * Safely and efficiently operate specialized heavy equipment, such as backhoe, front-end loader, dump trucks, road sander, and asphalt roller. Skillfully manipulate a variety of hand and power tools, including jackhammers, chain saws, blowers, grooming machines, mowers and other lawn equipment. * Assist with DPW projects, as needed, including: repair and maintenance of roadways; patching potholes; building and repairing curbs and sidewalks; excavating and backfilling trenches; repairing road signs; and clearing brush along roads/highways and in the public right-of-way. * Cooperatively contribute to seasonal needs by operating vehicles to remove roadway snow, spread salt and scrape ice; assist in emergency highway repairs and other Public Works related emergency repairs. Provide on-call service during snow emergencies. Qualifications and experience: * High School graduate or equivalent; 3 years experience in Public Works maintenance activities, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. * Proficiency in the operation and mechanics of a diverse range of Public Works heavy equipment. Working knowledge of the materials and techniques required for maintenance and repair projects. * Massachusetts Class B/Commercial Drivers License required. Massachusetts Hoisting Engineers license required, 2A preferred, 2B and 4G required.
