The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for performing a variety of labor duties to include operating and transporting heavy and specialized equipment for the repair, construction, and maintenance of the water distribution and wastewater collection system. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Knowledge of State, City, and department regulations, rules, and policies related to the collection and disposal of solid waste * Knowledge of vehicle safety procedures and practices * Knowledge of commercial vehicle operating procedures * Knowledge of city streets, alleys, and rural areas * Ability to safely operate a Solid Waste vehicle in heavy traffic and in all types of weather conditions * Ability to develop work schedules and coordinate work assignments * Ability to operate a computer and other basic office equipment, as well as basic computer software * Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with co-workers, supervisors and the general public * Ability to read and interpret data collected * Ability to communicate clearly and effectively * Ability to exercise independent judgement and work with limited supervision * Ability to work primarily outside with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust, damp or wet surfaces, and high noise level * Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodations
