ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS * Operates heavy equipment of various sizes and types including loader, backhoe, grader, oil distributor, hi-lift, etc. * Operates dump and other trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various materials or equipment. * Operates dump truck with a snowplow and salt/cinder spreader in the removal of ice and snow. * Operates trucks pulling a float or other equipment. * Maintains a variety of records relating to materials hauled, work performed, job location, hours worked, etc. * Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement patching, ditch digging, shoveling, jack hammering, chain sawing, and other physical labor necessary. * Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use. * Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment. * Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such as air compressor, brush chipper, brush hog, chain saw, jackhammer, or mechanized broom. * Performs all duties in accordance with safety policies and procedures. * Assists in the training of new or lower-level employees to increase their skills and promote safety in the maintenance and construction of roads and storm drainage facilities. * Places traffic control devices and performs duties as flagger for work zone traffic control in compliance with the County's standards and guidelines. * Performs some work as part of the County's Emergency Operations Plan. * Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned. * Performs work at assigned location during specified business hours. * Performs related additional duties as required and assigned. There is a possibility of bodily injury when working with heavy equipment, confined spaces or cramped body positions, working near large moving equipment, on uneven or slippery surfaces, in darkness or dim light. The Operator - Heavy Equipment is responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment at a recycling center, landfill or transfer station for the purpose of transferring, spreading, covering, loading and/or compacting waste or soil in an efficient and safe manner. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: * Perform pre- and post-operation inspection of the equipment in accordance with Company policy to ensure windows, lights, mirrors and rear view camera are clean. Safely and efficiently operate equipment that may include: forklift, excavator, bulldozer, front-end loader and other equipment using proper safety standards. * Continuously monitor waste for evidence of unacceptable waste in materials. * Continuously monitor the condition of the equipment to ensure it is operationally ready at all times to minimize down time; clean tracks or wheels on equipment, as needed. * Perform and document minor service on equipment, referring more complicated mechanical issues to Maintenance Shop for repair. * Complete Equipment Condition Report and other reports, as necessary; report any necessary repairs to supervisor, as needed. * Follow all required safety policies and procedures. * Ensure that shop is clean, serviced and stored at the completion of each shift. * Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and equipment. Complete necessary repairs and replacements on engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems. Conduct thorough inspections of equipment and vehicles to identify potential issues and prevent breakdowns. Maintain accurate and detailed service records and reports. Communicate effectively with customers and colleagues, providing updates on repair progress and recommendations for preventative maintenance. Follow all safety procedures and protocols in the shop and on job sites. Stay current with industry advancements and changes in technology. Collaborate with other technicians and departments to ensure efficient and effective service delivery. Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 3 years of experience as a heavy equipment technician, with strong knowledge of diesel engines and equipment. Must have own tools and a valid driver’s license. Experience in the auto industry is preferred. Excellent troubleshooting and diagnostic skills. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong communication and customer service skills. Willingness to work flexible hours and occasional overtime.
