The NP/PA works under the direction of the surgeon, and duties consist of pre and postoperative care of the surgical patient

Job Description:
Job Summary: Participates in all aspects of pre and postoperative care of the cardiac surgical patient. This position will interface with various medical staff attending in providing care/coverage of the patients.
Essential Responsibilities:
Performs and documents preoperative evaluation (history and physical examinations). Orders and interprets diagnostic tests.
Examines and evaluates pre and postoperative patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Writes orders for medications and treatments. Performs invasive procedures such as: placement of arterial and central venous lines, insertion of chest tubes, intubations of patients, removal of intra-aortic balloon pump catheters.
Collaborates with staff surgeon and house staff in educating the patients and their families in medical care. Inserts and removes of chest tubes (thoracostomy), central line placements, arterial lines and Swan ganz floats. Troubleshoots intra-aortic balloon pump catheters. Removes intra-aortic balloon pump catheters and temporary pacing wires. Initiates blood products for hemodynamically unstable patients.
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree required.
License Nurse Practitioner License required., or Registration Physician Assistant License required., and Certificate 1 Basic Life Support required., and Certificate 2 Advanced Cardiac Life Support required.
3-5 years related work experience required.
NP/PA licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
