**Description**

**The shift for this position is 6:30a-7p.**

JOB DESCRIPTION:

+ Under direct supervision, prepares dialysis and Reverse Osmosis equipment before each hemodialysis session; cleans and sterilizes machines per protocol after each dialysis session; delivers equipment and supplies to patient room as scheduled; assists nurse with set up and break down of equipment in patient room before and after hemodialysis; performs quality control procedures (e.g., machine and water testing, routine maintenance) on machines; performs supply inventory, ordering and restocking; works cooperatively with staff and other departments in maintaining hemodialysis standards of care; supports compliance with departmental policies and procedures; maintains confidentiality.

+ May assist RN with annulation and removal of needles from grafts and fistulas.

+ May initiate and discontinue hemodialysis treatments under the RN supervision in the dialysis unit only.

+ Supports compliance with department policies and procedures; performs quality control procedures (e.g., machine and water testing, routine maintenance) on machines; and maintains confidentiality.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

+ High school diploma or equivalent.

+ Completion of a dialysis preparation course AND one year of patient care experience in a dialysis facility or acute dialysis setting OR two years of patient care experience in a dialysis facility or acute dialysis setting.

+ Certification as a hemodialysis technician is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Medium Max 25lbs): up to 25 lbs, 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 25 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

Summary:

The Hemodialysis technician initiates monitors and discontinues outpatient hemodialysis treatments under the supervision of the Hemodialysis charge RN.

Responsibilities:

1. Initiates, monitors and discontinues hemodialysis treatment according to established policies and procedures under nursing supervision. 2. Starts up, prepares, tears down and cleans machinery used for hemodialysis. 3. Recognizes emergent situations, provides immediate intervention and obtains nursing direction appropriately. 4. Assists in transfer of patients. 5. Age Specific Standards: The individual in the position must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the patient. In additions, s/he must possess the ability to assess patient data relative to age specific needs and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures.

Essential:

* BLS certification, or eligible to obtain during orientation.

* Within 18 months of being hired as a hemodialysis technician, applicant must successfully pass the Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) exam.

* Prior medical experience is preferred, Dialysis experience is preferred.

**What you will need as a Hemodialysis Technician:**

+ High School Diploma required.

+ Associate's Degree in science preferred.

+ Previous dialysis experience preferred.

+ Dialysis clinical technician certification required.

+ Dialysis clinical technician certification must be maintained in accordance with federal regulations.

**What you will do as a Hemodialysis Technician:**

Under supervision of nursing staff, is responsible for the monitoring and direct care of patients on hemodialysis. Monitors patients on an ongoing basis and communicates information to appropriate team member. Works as a member of the interdisciplinary team caring for the dialysis patient.

+ Reports to work in designated attire, (i.e. ID badge, lab coat, is neat, maintains proper hygiene).

+ Communicates with other departments, agencies or service organizations.

+ Functions as part of a multidisciplinary team.

+ Demonstrates ability to plan work activities.

+ Carries out doctors' orders within parameters of role.y

+ Follows infection control policies and procedures (e.g., hand washing, face shield and gloves).

+ Responsible for helping minimize waste in assigned unit.

+ In conjunction with team members, monitors and adjusts dialysis therapy within scope of practice to meet the needs of the patient (keeping in mind the age-specific needs of the population served).

+ Serves as a resource referral for the patient.

+ Demonstrates problem-solving methodologies for the benefit of the patients/significant others and the patient care area. Does so within scope of authority.

+ Maintains neat and safe work area.
