Hennepin County Library company history timeline

1885

Minneapolis Public Library was founded in 1885 with the establishment of the Minneapolis Public Library Board by an amendment of the Minneapolis city charter.

1889

Minneapolis Public Library's first building was the Main Library, opened in 1889.

1890

The first branch was North Branch, established in 1890, more branches in south and east Minneapolis followed, and the system grew with the city.

1922

Hennepin County Library started in 1922 as a horse-drawn "bookmobile" to areas outside the core city of Minneapolis.

1930

Print directories can be searched by address beginning in 1930.

1938

Founded in 1938 as the Hennepin County Historical Society, Hennepin History Museum is dedicated to bringing the diverse history of Hennepin County and its residents to life through exhibitions, library, collections, and educational programs.

1951

The exhibit ends with an extra showing on Sunday, May 23 – the 70th anniversary of the Terrace opening in 1951.

1952

By 1952 there were 24 libraries in the system; additional city libraries, such as Hopkins, were incorporated into the county system.

1958

In 1958, the Hennepin County Historical Society purchased the George Christian Mansion to house its growing collections.

1973

Hennepin County Library opened its first area library, Southdale, in 1973.

1986

Date range varies by publication, starting as far back as 1986.

2003

Print directories available at Minneapolis Central Library through 2003.

2008

Ultimately, the two library systems reached an agreement, and the merger was finalized on January 1, 2008, under the name of Hennepin County Library.

2020

View websites as they appeared in the past, including the library website and selected local websites from governments, non-profit organizations, restaurants, houses of worship, and more, beginning in 2020.
